agenda 2014 – For a Better Year

If you need a kick in the pants to make next year better, maybe this agenda by Julie Joliat will be a good fit. Each week gives you a tip or challenge to complete, giving you a little reminder to change things up. Take a day off to do nothing… Bake some walnut bread… Watch a documentary, etc. There’s plenty of room for notes and there’s also useful information that’s bound to come in handy: world maps, conversion tables, monthly planners and the like.

Dux Brass Pencil Sharpener

Do you use pencils? Do you have a plastic pencil sharpener? Pfft. Toss it in the recycling bin, because this one is much better. Made of solid brass, the Dux sharpener is built to last. The weight of it alone would keep it from getting lost/shuffled around with your other desk tools, but there’s no guarantee that it wouldn’t walk away with a coworker, so watch out.

Concrete Small Format Tape Dispenser

Sure, you’ve seen concrete desk accessories by Magnus Pettersen before, but have you seen the red and blue tape dispensers? Your life is simply not complete until you consider just how good red tape in a red concrete tape dispenser looks. I’m kidding, of course, but it does look pretty sharp, as does the blue. This version is a little smaller than the original version, fyi.

Tab Notebooks

Organize your projects, thoughts, recipes, dreams, or whatever else needs sorting with this set of 4 notebooks shaped with tabs. Wooden Ruler by HAY

Striped, random rulers are sure to cheer you up no matter what. Just look at those colors and lines! I’d say if you’re going to get one, you might as well get a few, especially as you can’t specify which one(s) you prefer. That’s good news, by the way, as it’d be hard to pick favorites.

Brass Alphabet Bookmark

Midori just keeps making brass desktop tools that are hard to resist. And this one packs a double function: use as a bookmark and as a stencil. Even if your handwriting isn’t all that bad, a little block lettering now and then won’t hurt, right? It’ll most likely fit perfectly within your notebook.

FIELD Magnifier

Don’t you dare say you have no need for a magnifier. What about those tiny hairs and freckles on your hand? The intricate markings of your own signature? The fuzzy anthers of a flower? Or the crisp text on that print out sitting on your desk? This heavy bronze magnifier designed by Daniel/Emma (in collaboration with Field) doubles as a paper weight and will keep your curiosity sharp.

‘Errare’ Eraser

For those days when you really screw up, pick up this eraser and read the notable latin phrase aloud: “Errare humanum est.” That translates into ‘To err is human’ if you hadn’t guessed, and will make you feel just a tiny bit better about whatever mess you made. On a side note, you might as well get several, and give them away one by one to friends/coworkers when they need the same reminder.

Desk set, Matte Black

If there are multiple paperclips and post-it notes scattered about your desk, you and I have something in common. Maybe we should consider these handcrafted paper boxes by Timothy Wikander of MaterialMaterial. In addition to the desk set you see above, there’s also a small box w/lid and a large box w/lid, any of which is sure to hide/store our miscellany with subtle style. Each box is constructed from 2 mm grey board (the same material used in hardbound book covers) and coated in smooth matte textured card stock.

MIDORI MD 2014 Monthly Notebook

It’s October already, and you know what that means. Besides getting your Halloween festivities sorted, your Thanksgiving plans arranged, and your subconscious started on options for special holiday gifts, you need to find a decent monthly planner for 2014. No? Lucky you. Yes? Join the club. I’ve been on the quest to find the perfect (i.e. minimal) monthly planner for what seems like forever, and though Moleskine and others have come close, I think this one by MIDORI (and available from Baum-Kuchen) might just win first place for 2014.

With plenty of negative space on each monthly calendar, there’s oodles of room to make notes. Memo pages are divided into eight sections for optional weekly pages and there’s plenty of blank pages for extra sketches or notes. Last but not least, the ” target=”_blank” >MIDORI Monthly Notebook is bound by strings, so the planner opens flat for easier writing and perusal.

Standard Magnets

If only small, turned, wooden magnets existed, we could place them upon any metal surface and know that our papers, notes, and tear-outs would be shown as an elegant web of ideas (all due to the uniform simplicity of the magnets, of course) thus allowing our brains to settle upon brilliant results previously unknown. Oh, wait, they do exist, available from Fort Standard in a set of six, no less, and feature very strong rare-earth magnets, so they’ll hold up all manner of things (keys, perhaps?) with no problem. Nothing stopping those brilliant results now.

Luis Organizer

I’ve long admired the Uten.Silo, but somehow can’t bring myself to pay the $475 for organized bliss. The Luis Organizer isn’t a whole lot less in terms of the damage done to your wallet, but it provides the same sort of function with a minimal, geometric purity, and is handmade in Barcelona by OLI13 (so you won’t see it around as much, if you care about that sort of thing).

Roll / Rule

Hold your hand up if you want an etched acrylic ruler. My hand is raised, how about yours? Designed by Paul Cocksedge, these rulers are sculptural pieces with millimeter accuracy, and they’re intended for functional use, mind you, so don’t just admire it from across the room. Choose between the classic square or the round barrel. Also, do I need to hit you over the head with the obvious fact that either of these would make an excellent gift? No? I didn’t think so.
