FURNISHINGS

Tactile Cabinet

Every time I go into The Conran Shop, I admire this cabinet. With such clean lines and simple white (or black) doors, it’s pretty much the perfect sideboard. It also has a subtle push-click closing that’s a nice touch. We originally posted this back in 2008, but I think it looks just as good as when it first hit the scene.

W81 x D20 x H29 in.
Also available in oak with glossy black doors.
10-12 week lead time.

$3,495.00, Buy it here.

Juan DIY Stool

Update: Just saw that this is now $29. Sounds like a good deal, no?

Foldable. Stackable. Easy to store when flat. Does your laundry. Uh, no, not the last bit. But it is pretty amazing that you simply set up this stool with built-in indents and straps, and ta-da(!) you’ve got a transportable stool for 50 bucks.

Club Chair Pool

Whoa, bright stuff. This boxy club chair is bang on trend, isn’t it… of course, I say it’s on trend, but I don’t have the images or data to back it up, other than a few links to fashion shows that you may or may not be interested in. Nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see a nice pop of color hit the floor of a retail store, especially mid February.

Lap Shelving System

I do believe I’m enamored with Marina Bautier’s Lap shelving. One of your fellow readers commented on the Muir Coat Rack the other day (thank you fourthandnorth) stating preference for Bautier’s Portemanteau Coat Rack, which is incredibly similar to the Muir, yet hides the mail slot and features off center pegs.

So, naturally after checking out the Portemanteau, I saw the Lap shelving and fell in love a little bit. The solid oak frame provides support for a variety of sheet metal components, including a regular bookshelf, a tray shelf, and a deep and shallow box. Now, it’s really the tray and boxes that catch the eye as they offer a distinct advantage to corral various items, giving organization options without the need for additional storage pieces.

Cant Desk by Blu Dot

I don’t know how we missed posting this when it first came out. It’s the perfect desk for a small workspace (42w x 34h x 25d) so you can fit it into a tight corner space with no worries. The walnut veneer is a nice contrast to the grey or red steel as well.

Life After Corkage Bar Stool + Ottoman

Hmm. What to do with 2,500 wine and champagne corks? Make an ottoman and barstool out of them and then sell it/them for $980 (I think they’re sold as a set, but I’ve got an email out to double check). Now, who has enough corks lying around to try a DIY version of this?

Whoa, update: it’s $980 each, not sold as set.

Rip + Tatter Chair

Now, obviously, with a little bit of effort, you might be able to recreate this chair for your own kids without shelling out $55. If not, you can shell out the $55 and rest easy that it’s not so expensive that it can’t be destroyed (and then recycled, of course). Designed by Pete Oyler, the chair is made from industrial cardboard and โ€œsculptedโ€ย into shape by hammering.

100% recyclable, non-toxic

Kola Chair

Can you believe this chair is under the $500 mark? With such a contemporary silhouette/shape, it would look at home pretty much any where. It’s a breath of fresh air to know there are modern seating options that won’t break the bank.

Also available in black.

Compass Trestle Legs

The best part about investing in a pair of trestle legs is that you can change out the top at any time, lending a new look to your home or office instantly. Go from glass to natural wood to a bright colored panel… lots of possibilities. These particular trestle legs are quite a bit pricier than the simple steel ones you can get from a hardware store (see Crawford or Fulton Sawhorse), but they are, of course, made of solid beechwood and have a little more elegance/refinement.

Adjustable height.

Treasury Table

If you’re after functionality and storage, this may just be your table, because literally every inch of this table is a sliding drawer. Smaller drawers hold stationary and office supplies, while the larger ones are designed around standard paper sizes from A5 up to A2. My favorite detail is the frosted glass top, which is translucent enough to see the contents inside, yet is opaque enough to quickly hide things from view and adds an overall “soft” effect to the table. Each table is made to order and available in any RAL or NCS color.

Bookworm Cardboard Stool

Not a bad price for a stool that looks like a big pile of books, even if it is cardboard… though, do keep in mind you’ll have to pay shipping from Australia. Holds up to 200kg and comes flat-packed in a clear carry bag.

Others worth mentioning are the Gold, Soundbooster, and Log Stools.

Railcar Bookcase

Reclaimed pine and steel give this bookcase its industrial charm. At 84″ wide (7 feet!), you’ll be sure to have plenty of space for stacks of books and miscellany… lots of room for those of you with big collections.

Shipping is about $185 give or take, fyi.

Honeycomb Flexible Shelves

How’s a bit of bright yellow to cheer up your January blues? These Honeycomb units are by Quinze and Milan, who you might know for their Primary Poufs. Honeycomb geometry aside, they look to be quite the versatile shelving option. Made from thin walled polyethylene, the units are held together with a riveting system which allows for stacking up to 7 meters in two directions. You also have the option to remove a few units within the wall if you should so wish.

Keep in mind the $297 price is for one unit only, so it could get expensive if you went bonkers with them… maybe start with just a few and see if you need more?

Available in Honey, Black, White, Mint, Cherry, or Light Grey.
(Cherry, Mint, and Light Grey are a bit higher in price at $318.00)

Also, these are available from My Urban Child, whose website is the spitting image of home furniture + patio, so I’m guessing they are two heads on the same body of business.

Walker vs. Strut

Update: Ah-ha! Blu Dot made this table for Crate&Barrel, hence the striking resemblance. See John’s comment below.

We’re all familiar with the occasional copy cat, and it’s hard to complain when the copier comes up with something so similar at a lesser price point. Sure, there’s the intellectual property argument, but as long as the item is different enough, there’s no real harm done, right? (Right?)
