Woody Shelving System

This rather simple shelving system gives a sense of lightness despite its size. Soap-treated oak sticks, powder-coated steel and screws give the frame strength and stability, and don’t worry if pink and sky blue don’t quite suit your interior plans, as both sizes are available in three different colors.

Indie Furniture

Indie Furniture certainly has hit a lot of the right targets with their new customizable furniture. Rather than selling a completed product, Indie Furniture provides universal shelving joints that ultimately require you to put together yourself with your own provided wood. The benefit of this is that you can customize your shelving to your exact needs, use any type of wood you desire, save a whole lot on shipping, and enjoy the task of putting together your own set of furniture. Customization is done through their online configurator which tells you final dimensions, how many connectors are needed, the cost of the connectors, and how many wood panels are neededall in one convenient PDF! Brilliant I’d say.

Bamboo Bookshelf II Hemingway

So, get this, that’s the price. There’s no ‘1’ missing, nor any zeros. And why does a bamboo bookshelf that looks this cool have the reasonable price tag of $699? Apparently the retailer doesn’t use distributors; they manufacture their products on demand and sell them direct. Hmm… any takers?

Offi Nester Stacking Boxes

These would be super handy to own if you happen to move around a lot. Whether you stack them for book storage or use them as small tables, they’re certainly a smart upgrade from plastic milk crates (which we all had at one point in our lives, so don’t feel bad if you’re guilty of owning them now). I can also see them working well in a kid’s room, only if the kids are past the climbing up furniture stage, of course.

Like Russian nesting dolls the Nester Boxes fit inside of each other for easy transport and shipping. The small footprint also cuts down on the amount of packaging needed for shipping. Each box is finely crafted in molded ply creating simple and versatile storage. They can be used stacked for book storage or if used as singles they can function as small tables.

Walnut or Birch.
Sold only in sets of 4.

Bookwave Hanging Storage

Whoa. How amazing is this storage unit? It sort of reminds me of those shoe closet hanger thingies except bigger/better/stranger. I wonder if this could be replicated in a DIY sense, for those of us that can’t afford the price tag? I can see it working well for newspapers or magazines, or even to store clothes (if you can afford such a thing purely for wardrobe purposes).

Felt fabric and stainless steel.

One Storage by Piero Lissoni for Kartell

Here’s another module storage system, this time by Piero Lissoni for Kartell. It’s made from a sturdy steel frame and acrylic resin doors, walls and floors, and will stand the test of time next to a cheaper version not made with the same materials.

I think something like this would look amazing in the kitchen.

Each unit is available with or without doors, and the base unit is available with either feet or wheels. The number of possible combinations is endless!

Loadbearing MShelving

Customizable storage systems aren’t really a new thing, but Loadbearing’s MShelving does have a certain appeal with its industrial frame with pick-your-own door color options. With somewhat reasonable price points, it could fit your storage needs quite well.

MShelving… allows you to create your own look from a wide range of interchangeable colored steel and wood veneer sliding doors and half- and full- height drawers. MShelving was designed by Mathias Frei of Zurich, and is produced in Switzerland and Italy. It combines a sturdy, fairly industrial-feeling steel shelving system base with a refined, simple and attractive sliding door system… The shelving unit itself is made of galvanized steel. The wood finish doors are wood veneers (all from sustainable forests) on a particle board base with a galvanized steel handle edge, and the color and metallic finish doors are made of powder-coated steel.

Colors: Wooden Veneers, 21 Colors, Metal Finishes

Note: Keep in mind the prices shown below are for the units only, the price will increase depending upon how many doors you want and what wood or color option you choose.

B-LINE Zig-Zag Modular Bookcase

This modular bookcase can be arranged in several different ways to fit your space. From the description it seems as if two of the elements are included in the price, yet take note that it looks like three are shown in the above picture. Four would be needed to create a complete column or circular shape.

“The two elements that make it up can be alternated in such a way as to obtain a partitioning structure or a wall bookcase, or can simply be used to make up half-circles or columns.”

Aziz Sariyer, 2009

Four Degrees by MicroWorks

I love this so much it hurts my feelings. It’s still currently in prototype, but frankly I’ve been bored with all the available options for shelving so I wanted to post something a little more exciting. From a Tokyo based design firm called MicroWorks–the designers discovered that books tilted at a 4 degree angle don’t accumulate dust as quickly as books which are stored flat. Whatever the reason for the tilt, I love it.

Shelving Unit from Brick House

Seeing as I’m mightily impressed by this shelving unit, you might be too. Morgan of The Brick House built this unit out of plumbing pipe and fittings for about $200 (and apparently a lot of frustration). It sure looks good, and if you’re brave enough to embark on this DIY project, check out the supply list here.
