Check out this wrinkly chair (that most of us will never be able to afford).

The “Sponge” chair represents the debut of young Dutch designer Peter Traag, a graduate of London’s Royal College. Its shape, inspired by sea sponges, is the result of a technological innovation that allows it to obtain a firm yet invitingly soft seat. Polyurethane foam has been injected directly into an overly large “upholstery” shell, which has been reinforced by a special fluorocarbon polyester thread. This production technique results in a unique chair, forming “elephant-skin” random folds that mimic a well-worn classic armchair.

Surprisingly, this chair was designed way back in ’05 and I’ve no idea why we haven’t posted it before. I like how it uses seatbelt scraps without weaving them together in a grid pattern (like so many other products).

The stitch print on these ‘blocks’ would really give a feeling of texture to a room, and considering how easy the fabric is to care for it’s a no brainer for kids or pets.

I’m a little bit in love with this series by Hans Brattud.

The iconic Scandia Series was designed by Hans Brattud in 1957. During the 1970′s the factory in Norway burned down and was never rebuilt, therefore, putting Scandia out of production. In 2001, Norwegian manufacturer, Fjord Fiesta brought the series back. Working closely with Brattrud himself, they made sure that every detail of the original design was perfected.

Yes, this is a reproduction of the PK20 Easy chair by Poul Kjaerholm. I won’t get into whether or not you should buy the original or the copy, because that’s your choice, but I will point out that this is approximately $6,000 less than the original.

This chair subtly evokes a Halloween feeling for me, probably mainly due to the web-like base.

Made from tradtional bentwood components, these creative takes on the classic chair are something to see (and perhaps collect as funds permit?).

Martino [Gamper] studied sculpture and product design at the University of Applied Art in Vienna. He went on to do a Masters at the Royal College which he completed in 2000. His work is widely exhibited and he recently won the Wallpaper Magazine ‘Best Alchemist’ award in 2008. Behind each of his pieces is a story involving materials, techniques, people and places. He nurtures an interest in unwanted and disparate objects and by reworking furniture, which he finds on the streets, he creates mismatched families of objects.
Martino has travelled to the old Thonet factory in Croatia to see the bentwood components which he will use in his own inimitable and unexpected way. Three styles are available.

Look! It’s a poem about a chair:

Could a chair be as streamlined as the body of an aeroplane? A body that looks rounded, similar to a boulder being eroded for a long time in the sea before it reaches its ultimate shape. The base strengthens the lightness of the design by its shape. The knot is an aesthetical feature but also a technical detail. On the one side a point where all the curved lines meet and on the other side a place where the fabric can be held together.
