Beer Foamer

It is what it is: a Beer Foamer. What’s the point of that? Well, to those of you that are craft beer aficionados, you know that the “complete beer experience” includes those precious bubbles, and when you pour beer from a bottled or can, it just doesn’t have the same effect. So, that’s where this little device from Norm Architects comes in. A clear, shatterproof container holds your beer while the copper top supports the foaming device. A press of the button will create the dense foam you’d expect straight from the tap. It’s as simple as that.

Champagne Sabre

We could play the ‘what is it’ game, but let’s just skip straight to the item at hand. It’s a Champagne Sabre, a blade intended to separate the collar and cork from the champagne bottle at its weakest spot above the neck. Now, you’ll notice I mentioned it’s a blade, albeit a curved, blunt blade; does this strike a little fear into anyone else? I’m sure it’s dramatic to slice off the neck of a bottle, but I’m not sure I’d want anyone attempting that particular feat when they’ve already had a few drinks. You know what I mean?

What Is It?

Let’s play the guessing game: what the heck is the item shown above? Despite looking like some sort of futuristic alien egg, it serves a useful purpose when it comes to oenology. If that word is unfamiliar to you, oenology is “the science and study of all aspects of wine and winemaking” (-wikipedia). Looky there, you just learned something, and now you probably have a good idea of the item’s purpose. Yes? No? If not, the pictures below will give it away.

Wine Thermals from Angle33

I know keeping your wine chilled at the perfect temperature is the least of your worries, but, hey, if you can eliminate that worry altogether, why not do it? This Wine (or Champagne) Thermal is made from concrete and will keep wine at the perfect temperature no matter how hot it gets this summer. That seems a long way away from the cold, dreary weather outside our doors today, but it won’t hurt to be prepared. Oh, and if you’re fond of your company logo, engraving is an option. Available from Angle33. (They also offer concrete coasters and Wine Bottle Coasters to keep those drips and spills from spoiling your tabletop.)

Hexagon Bottle Opener

You can’t have this now, no matter how much you want a bottle opener in the shape of a hexagon. You’ll have to wait until May, as it’s a new item from Ferm Living, and should you possess the patience, you should know it’s made of solid brass with a matte polish. It could also double as an excellent weapon, if you have a good aim and strong throwing arm, but you already knew that, didn’t you?

Solid Copper Flask

Need a new home for your happy juice? How about a handcrafted, pure solid copper flask? It will patina with use, so as you age, it will too. And if that makes you sad, don’t you worry: if you prefer to keep it polished, just use a mixture of ketchup (yes, ketchup) and coarse salt to bring back the shine. I see this as a perfect gift for a special event like the birth of a newborn (for the parents), a big promotion, or a silver or golden anniversary- be sure to attach an applicable quote, of course, so that your gift is received in the right light.

Wine Preserver Bottle

I rarely open a bottle of wine without finishing it, but that’s because I’ve got someone with a hollow leg to share it with me. However, a nice bottle of wine sometimes deserves to be enjoyed over a few nights, and this Wine Preserver Bottle will provide an air tight seal to lock in flavors for up to a week.

After you pour in your wine, you drop the float on top to create the seal, thus protecting your precious wine from that pesky oxygen. And, when it’s time to pour the wine into your glass, remove the spill-proof lid, tip the bottle and the float automatically adjusts to the pouring angle.

The HOST Chill Cooling Pour Spout

Has warm wine got you down? It’s just horrible, isn’t it, when your favorite bottle isn’t the ideal temperature? Picky drinkers will be happy to see this particular pour spout that integrates a cooling rod, thus insuring your bottle won’t lose its luster due to these warmer days of summer. And, if you’re not sure what the recommended temperature is, don’t you worry, there’s a chart below.

Stainless Steel Growler

You might like your draft beer, but do you like it enough to have your own growler? Maybe, probably, whatever your answer might be, the point is, if you’re going to use a growler, this stainless steel one is much lighter than its glass relatives and will keep your beer colder, longer. A silicone sealed lid keeps contents fresh. Also, fyi, Popular Mechanics did a lab test to see how well stainless steel growlers held up to abuse, this one included.

Loop Bottle Opener

Want a bottle opener that will last forever? Take stock of this stainless steel version. It’s got a rough tumbled finish that will take its fair share of abuse no matter how many bottles you open on a daily basis. The simplified form and industrial finish means no nonsense- no silly frilliness here, thank you very much.

Penta-Hex Bottle Opener

So, without looking at the title, what do you think this is? A weapon? A tool? Perhaps both? It’s a small bottle opener, and one with a hexagonal opening and faceted polygonal silhouette at that. Designed by Bec Brittain (she has worked with Lindsey Adelman, who you’ve heard of by now, and has her own excellent lighting designs). For an extra $5, Ms. Brittain will add a monogram with up to 7 characters, including any combination of letters, numbers, a period, and a heart. Talk about an excellent gift for anyone with an appreciation of geometry- it’s a no brainer.

Tovolo Sphere Ice Molds

What’s the big deal about large, spherical ice molds? Well, besides them looking cooler than a bunch of small cubes, they melt slower, meaning they’ll cool your drink without watering it down (as much as a bunch of small cubes). And, if you’re a little skeptical about how well the sphere holds up, I can personally attest after 2 weeks of festive imbibing (hic!) these Tovolo ice spheres have kept their shape well past the last drop of each and every drink I’ve had. They’re also stackable, leak-free, and won’t tip in the freezer.

Whiskey Decanter

What to get the person who needs nothing? Well, if they like whiskey, and you’ve $200 to spend, you should get them something beautiful and mostly unnecessary, like this whisky decanter by Laurence Brabant. Its bubble chamber enables one to measure the perfect jigger of liquor and then dispense the liquor through the glass tube into one’s glass. It should also be mentioned that this could double as a vase when needed (and when the whiskey is gone).
