Cutting Boards

Grid Planks by Daphna Laurens

The lines on the Grid Planks by Daphna Laurens would certainly tempt you to arrange food precisely along the perfectly ordered grid, for at least the first few moments of food prep anyways. After that, your sanity might be questioned. Consider the smooth side for cutting, and keep the grid side pristine for serving.

Wood & Leather Serving Board

You’re not going to transfer whatever you’ve just cut to some other platter to impress your guests, because that’s a waste of time and twice the cleanup. So, you might as well have a presentable wood cutting board, right? This handmade Wood & Leather Serving Board by Pernt features a saddle leather handle with brass screws, so there’s just a touch of rustic thrown in with the beauty of the wood. Save yourself some time and have your veggies, cheese or charcuterie looking just as good as (or better than) they would if they were on the fanciest platter you will never need to own.

Field Boards by Hay Denmark

This collection of bread boards were inspired by plowed fields, which is entirely evident when you view them from above. The deep grooves prove functional for collecting crumbs, thus minimizing your cleanup and keeping your tabletop/countertop even more pristine. Use the boards for cutting and serving, as they’ll add some texture and interest to your already impressive tableau.

Blackline Collection from Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co.

If I were one to celebrate Valentine’s Day, I would give one of these cutting boards from the Blackline Collection to my love. Why? Because they’re black, like my heart. Just kidding. The pieces of Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co.’s Blackline Collection aren’t painted or stained, instead, a natural reactive process is used to obtain a distinctive dark finish. This finish is durable and food-safe, as the source of the dye “comes from within the wood itself.” Pretty impressive, and altogether lovely.

Tilt Cutting Boards

As we’re all well aware, there are many excellent cutting boards for us to choose from, and now we can add one more to the ever growing pile. Danish designer Tobias Tøstesen has created the Tilt Cutting Board for Menu, and it has an angled side to let it lean steadily against a wall for storage. Its asymmetry adds further to its aesthetic; rounded and straight lines set it apart from the usual (now boring?) rectangle.

Handled Cutting Boards

What’s this pile of curvy, ornate wood planks? They’re cutting boards by Haidee Drew, and each one has an intricate handle that’s sure to dress up every bit of food you prepare and serve. You might recognize a small nod to old silver serving pieces in the design of the handles, and you’d be spot on, as the designer drew her inspiration from the silver collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Shape Boards

Gah! I didn’t think it possible to admire a cutting board so much. This collection of Shape Boards from Bower Studio (also available from Cooper-Hewitt Shop) has my head in a spin. The blank side is for cutting, the (non-toxic) painted side for a decorative twist of a 3D geometric shape. And, get ready for it, Bower Studio also has Shape Mirrors, but that’s for another post (tomorrow).

Rothko Serving Boards

These wooden boards are for serving rather than for cutting, which makes sense once you notice the nicely crafted recessed rectangles (hence the ‘Rothko’) and how well the different sizes would mix and match for an architecturally minimal presentation. Made from sustainable panga panga wood, the Rothko Serving Boards were designed by Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune and produced by Botswana furniture maker Peter Mabeo working in collaboration with local artisans.

What is it?

Hmm, what in the world could this small, ramp-like item be? It’s made from natural cork and is about the size of a medium sized notepad (for lack of a better comparison). Any guesses? Pay attention to the incline, ribbing, and bumper at the end… would you be able to store, say, longer, flat things on it somehow?

Complete Carving Set

Vegans, ignore this post. Just skip on down to the next one. Now, omnivores, it’s not even Halloween and here we are talking about Thanksgiving. What gives? Well, it’s better to be prepared and get what you need when it’s in stock than wait until the last minute when it’s all gone. As a case in point, this Complete Carving Set by Joseph Joseph was in stock when I bookmarked it last week, and now it’s not.

However, you can purchase the non-slip, multi-function chopping board (a.k.a. Cut&Carve™ Plus, $18) and the 8” carving knife and a 7.5” carving fork which join neatly together with magnets and store safely inside a protective sheath (a.k.a. Duo™ Carve, $30) separately, or put your name on the waiting list for when the set is back in stock.

Stone Chopping Board

This looks way too nice to use as a chopping board, doesn’t it? White Morwad marble provides a durable surface for dinner prep and serving while the delicate brass saucer is the perfect spot for dips or other special fare. And, if you like the look of the marble and brass, you’ll want to consider the Stone Spice Grinder (shown below) and Stone Pestle And Mortar by Tom Dixon as well.
