Table Lighting

Paper Lamp

Here’s a nice lamp with a very affordable price tag. Inspired by origami, this lamp is constructed without any screws or glue. It’s held together simply by its interlocking structure. Using minimal materials allows for a simple beauty that is also environmentally friendly- no small feat in this day and age, don’t you think?

Capello Lamp

Let’s just get this straight: this lamp is $260*. Compared to the Love Letter Light (also by molo), which ran around the $400 mark, that’s a bargain. Now, consider its marble base, which is actually a byproduct from the base for the Arco floor lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers. Next, the little paper cap (โ€œcappelloโ€ย in Italian) is attached to the steel wire with a simple magnetic connection, which allows you to slide and tilt it into any position. Do you remember that it costs $260*? Such a nice price for a lovely little lamp. And, if you like, you can remove the steel wire and paper cap to move the light to other places, say, a wine bottle or a small hole drilled into a wood surface. More shots below.

Boya Lamp

This little lamp takes its inspiration from the sea- think lighthouse beacons and buoys. At 8.5″ high and 7.5″ in diameter, it’s small enough to fit on a desk or large side table without taking up a lot of visual space, especially as there’s no traditional cloth lampshade. The base is made of reclaimed American red and white oak beams and the shade is thick, tinted grey glass.

J1 Studio’s C.Lamp

$158? Is that right? J1 Studio’s C.Lamp is made from lightweight polypropylene and utilizes a folding technique to avoid a metal frame, thus reducing the cost associated with manufacturing. Wooden tripod legs complete the simple lamp, giving a minimal, natural look to any room that needs an extra light source. Designed by Jae Won Cho of J1 Studio, where you may also purchase the lamp directly.

Wings Lamps by Haim Evgi Design Studio

While these lamps are inspired by different bird wings, some of us may tend towards a stronger zoomorphic interpretation, for the lamp can appear to stand like a bird, with the solid oak shade as its head. A thin iron leg and base gives the lamp a perched stance, which takes up minimal room on a desktop or tight floor plan.

Bollard Lamp

Four lamps in one, really? Yes, it’s true, the Bollard Lamp can be placed in four different ways around your home. Designer Shane Schneck planned the silicone Bollard Lamp to be used in various ways: it can drop down as a simple hanging pendant, you can angle it (hanging) as a spotlight, place it on a table or shelf on its side, or prop it up on its foot to beam light straight up. With all those options, it’ll be easy to find it a spot in your home.

Dandelight by Studio Drift

This is another wonderful sort of object we featured years ago (2008) and now deserves an update. Lonneke Gordijn of Studio Drift first started gluing dandelion seeds to LEDs a decade ago, and I think it’s now safe to say that the Dandelight is now somewhat of a design classic, made all the more certain by the MoMA Store offering it up for sale. Plus, right now, MoMA is offering free shipping and guaranteed holiday delivery(!).

Mini Lumio+

Fun! The Lumio is now available in a mini version, thus creating an excellent gift idea for absolutely everyone on your list. Don’t believe me? Well, the Lumio is a small, portable, rechargeable light that folds up into the size of a book. In the Mini’s case, it’s a compact pocket size (think wallet dimensions), which makes it perfect for transport/travel. Oh, and it also can charge your smart phone. Bam! As I said, an excellent gift.

Noguchi’s Light Sculptures

This is just a reminder, if you’ve forgotten, that Isamu Noguchi’s table light sculptures are very affordable. Case in point, the Table Lamp Model 1AG you see above, comes in at $145. My other favorite, the Floor Lamp Model UF3-Q, isn’t so incredibly affordable ($525), but it’s still worth considering as a collector’s item that provides a wonderful, diffused light.

Yupik Light

You probably can’t tell from the photo above, but this Yupik Light is made from polypropylene foam. That makes it very sturdy and extremely light. And did you notice the clear polycarbonate diffuser? It looks a little like a car headlight, doesn’t it? Set it on its side on a table, place it on the ground facing upwards, or hang it from the ceiling using the included hook. It’s an affordable light with many possible uses all over your home.

Hamill Lamp

Looking a little like an ancient artifact, the Hamill Lamp consists of a hammered brass shade, a blackened steel base, and the necessary socket, bulb, and cloth cord. There’s nothing complicated about it, yet the materials will add an extra layer of warmth- and maybe a dash of historical relevance- to an interior. There’s a sconce as well.

The Butler

Say hello to the Butler, a curved brass lamp with a hand turned oak tray. Clamp it on to a tabletop or shelf for an ideal spot to keep necessities- perhaps your keys, wallet or phone? It always helps to have just one area for important things; set it down in the same place every time and it’ll be there when you go to get it (if you don’t live with anyone else).

Rayleigh Table Lamp

This lamp is crazy pretty. Turn it on, and you see a spectrum of neon hues refracted by several prisms. Turn it off, and you have a sculptural piece that quietly shimmers as light moves around it. Made from optical grade dichroic glass and a 3W LED bulb (bonus: energy savings).

Peek LED Table Lamp

The Peek LED Table Lamp is a cute little thing, isn’t it? It swivels 360ยฐ around its heavy metal base and has an adjustable shade for the right diffused-yet-direct light. Simply touch the tip of the stem to dim the light to your preferred brightness. Look closer and you’ll see that the base has a concave top that can hold smaller items like paperclips, jewelry, and coins. Could it be the perfect companion to your desktop or bedside table? I’d say so.

V-LITE Lamp

Clever! This V-LITE Lamp doubles as a wall sconce- just hang it up by its foot/feet when you need more space on your nightstand or desk. The perforated metal shade gives off a wonderful pattern on the wall, as you can see, and is adjustable to get light right where you need it. Should we be surprised that this is a Commune and Atelier de Troupe collaboration? Nope, it’s too good to not have had several brains involved.
