The Japanese have a certain way of expressing themselves in emoticons.  While most of us are content with the standard colon-parentheses smiley face : ) , the Japanese prefer to use a variety of symbols, communicating a wide range of expressions beyond just happiness. The Kaoiro is a stamp specifically designed for recreating these emoticons in the very analog world of paper and print ( ^ _ ^ ).

Sadly, the Penguin merchandise seems to be heading in the same direction of Pantone: oversaturation. However, if you can get beyond the fact that there’s way too many products to choose from, there’s quite a few gems. Many items would be excellent gifts, of course, separately or grouped together. There also looks to be Penguin deckchairs and tea towels, though no retailer seems to have any in stock (shoot).

This little recycled cardboard basket is inspired by an icosahedron (that’s 20 sides for you non-nerds). At about 8 inches wide, it’s a great size to store all manner of stuff, specifically all those little odds and ends lying around your desk. Arrives flat packed with instructions on assembly.

I’m a little remiss in posting this after the official launch, but as the saying goes, better late than never. Poppin is a new online shop offering great office supplies for pretty decent prices. I’ve had them bookmarked for weeks and now it seems all their products are available to purchase (their website is still in beta, though, so be kind). Whether you’d like an overhaul of your desk supplies or just a few odds and ends, their site is chock full of colorful office essentials (along with the requisite black and white pieces, of course).

If you care about presentation, or just simply the way papers or collections are kept, you’ll probably nerd out a little with me about this binder. Originating around 1917 from the KABE Verlag (KABE publication) company, the Springback binder was intended to instantly bind documents into a book, singly or in batches. A hidden binding can be opened and closed to rearrange or add contents, making it functional as a regular binder yet more secure as with a book cover. Keep in mind that the spine of the binder is rather large to accommodate the function, but I’d say that’s a small price to pay for such a finished look.

As we all know, goals are often easy to dream up but sometimes very hard to accomplish. Designer Victor Jack Mathieux set out to make a planner that has a step-by-step guide for setting goals. Intended for absolutely anyone, the easy format is a snap to follow and will help you define your resources and action plan. Once you have the plan down on paper, all that’s left is putting it into practice. Could be a thoughtful gift for a recent graduate.

This notepad has the IBM values message imprinted inside, which is nice in an old-school familiar sort of way. Black with white THINK imprint on cover. Only drawback it seems is you might have to order them in bulk. (Does any retailer have them for sale individually?)
