I’m a mind reader. I know you’re thinking that these canvas tote bags are sort of expensive, and they are… sort of. But, look close at the bottom seams and handles, and you’ll see a bag built for daily use. Each bag has a minimal, quiet vibe; edges are clean, devoid of stitching, to better highlight the material- that’s special.

Originally designed for surfers, this all-weather gear bag has welded seams and a water resistant zipper to keep water completely in (or completely out, if that’s your goal). Surfers, just stand inside the bag to remove your wetsuit, then zip it up for your trip home. Sand and seawater will be safely contained within. Everyone else, know that whatever you put in the bag will stay dry no matter what (within reason).

Need a light backpack for carrying essentials during the day? The City Backpack might just work. It’s made of water-repellent nylon and has a padded interior (for a 13″ laptop) with an inner pocket for an iPad or Kindle. A small front slip with a magnetic snap keeps writing implements and smaller items close at hand; that plus an inner zip pouch will keep your stuff properly sorted. There’s also the no-nonsense nylon City Briefcase (in black or slate, if you’re interested.

The reflective straps on this Notabag are sure handy, as they will make you very visible when you’re out and about at night. But, the design of the straps is even handier; do you notice their angle? With a single pull of those straps, the bag transforms from a tote into an easy backpack. That makes carrying contents much more convenient, either by foot or by bicycle. Smart.

Need new luggage for your holiday travels? Maybe something that can tackle rough roads and cracked sidewalks in all sorts of weather? Take a look at the G-Ro Carry-On Bag’s all-terrain wheels. They’re built to handle any terrain, and because of their larger diameter, the load is closer to its center of gravity. That means the bag balances better and feels lighter as you pull it around all those future, far-flung destinations.

Until our mobile devices figure out a way to charge themselves, you may want to arm yourself with this clutch*. It packs a full punch of a battery charge. That’s not necessarily a new thing- there are other clutches and bags that have battery packs- but this one is discreet enough to work with most wardrobes (very important) and it’s made of vegan leather (very important to vegans). That may just make it a perfect gift for someone that’s always glued to their phone, yet somehow constantly complaining of a low battery.

If you’ve got some loved ones on your gifts-to-give list that are extremely hard to shop for, you might want to choose something low key and useful like this tech envelope. The minimal exterior is elegant and restrained while the interior has room for an iPad Mini, cord and cable storage, cards, cash, passports, and travel documents. For an extra special touch, choose to monogram it with the recipient’s initials. Available in blush, navy, or tan.

Can there ever be too many minimal totes? I think not, because we are all a little picky in our quest for an everyday bag. This backpack by Minor History has a fold-over top with a magnetic closure, adjustable brass buckle straps, and a large zippered compartment (in the fold-over). That leaves plenty of room for a laptop and other necessities, either for your daily commute or a longer journey.

Okay, raise your hand if you use or have used Ikea’s large, blue shopping bag around your home or for other errands. Don’t worry, you won’t be ostracized, as I’m guilty of the same. It just goes to show that really large totes can be extremely useful. Ferm Living’s Herman Big Bag slides in as an alternative option, as it measures in at 26″ long with a 15″ and 13″ height and width. Heavy cotton canvas with leather handles is durable enough for all manner of toting to and fro and looks quite a bit nicer than plastic… though it does cost quite a bit more as well. It would be well suited for a weekend getaway bag, don’t you think?

Nice briefcases and fancy handbags are all fine and good, but sometimes you just need an inexpensive tote, preferably with a few pockets. This tote from Poketo is divided into two roomy compartments with a smaller middle pocket for your keys, phone, and wallet. The two larger compartments are especially handy for gym days, as you can keep your work clothes separate from your workout gear, or your water bottle away from your tablet.

Foodies and minimalists will love THE* Lunch Box. It’s made from anodized aluminum- that means it’s sturdy, lightweight, heat-conductive and hygienic. There’s no clips, straps, buttons, or branding (thank goodness), so your food will be the star of the show. Fun fact: the proportions of the box are based on the Japanese flag. (Back in stock!)

This folio beats the pants off of any other folio. It’s made of vegan leather (score!) and has a roomy zippered compartment that perfectly fits a 13″ laptop or iPad. One outside pocket gives you space for other necessities while still keeping its tailored, slim profile. Lack of decoration suits all genders; choose between gray, navy or cream. And, best of all, looking smart with this folio under your arm won’t cost a fortune.

Do you want a special sort of backpack? This one by The Unseen Emporium transforms from black to vivid colors in response to fluctuations in air pressure. A little reptilian, no? Of course, a bit of magic is involved- or science, if you prefer the truer explanation- and will have others doing double takes as they catch your bag changing color.

You know what’s fun? Colorful, recycled, polyethylene totes that are very sturdy, because you can lug them around everywhere and not worry about messing them up. Take it to the beach, the grocery store, your local garden nursery, attach it to your bike, use it for kids toys, fill it with ice to cool down drinks, etc… it’s a multipurpose tote that won’t crumple no matter what you throw in it. You’ll be happy to know that the green totes are made of sugar cane, which is super environmentally friendly (and a little more expensive).
