sawhorse worktable

Check out this new desk from West Elm. It’s very similar in look & feel to the Plane Table (from The Conran Shop) but there’s a difference in size, materials, and price (of course).

An expansive tabletop rests securely on two sturdy legs. Single drawer. Tabletop and legs of wood construction with durable sungkai wood veneer. Variations in richly textured, prominently grained sungkai make each piece unique. Simple assembly.

StudioDesk

Specifically designed for laptop users, this desk hides all peripherals underneath the surface to allow for a clean and organized workspace.

All peripherals and excess cables are hidden just under the sliding desktop surface. The storage compartment is therefore conveniently accessed from above. An elongated slot across the width of the desktop allows the necessary peripheral & power cables to enter/exit at any point, thereby keeping the desktop clear of clutter.

Console Desk by Studio Moe

This slim-lined console desk by Studio Moe was a quiet star at ICFF this year. The dimensions allow for placement pretty much anywhere that’s tight on space (depth wise), yet it has the full functionality of a desk with its well crafted drawer and wide work space.

All of our pieces are created from resawn hardwood beams salvaged from dismantled buildings across the country…Close to a billion board feet of wood are removed from buildings in the US every year. By reusing this material we reduce the impact on our landfills, eliminate the need to harvest trees, and are reminded of the simple beauty inherent in old wood. We use Ash as our primary species. An indigenous hardwood, ash has a unique blend of durability, stability and warmth.

Sinus trestle

So if you live inside the EU, these trestles are pretty reasonably priced (not to mention very cool)…but don’t get your heart set on them if you’re in the US, because then shipping makes it twice as expensive.

“The trestle Sinus consists of not more than one piece of steel tube.
Sinus is thereby stackable and with its merely three legs sees to a lot of legroom under the table.”

Sinus is available in the colours: Black, White, Blood Orange and Chrome.
H 72 cm x W 74 cm x D 36 cm
185 € per pair VAT included.
(shipping inside the EU is 29,50€, inside Germany is 9,90€)

Urban Hardwoods

Urban Hardwoods has such a wide variety of beautiful pieces, all handmade from salvaged wood in Seattle. I found them while drooling over a coffee table (lower right), and I’d recommend taking a look through their collection if you’re fond of modern wood pieces.
And, for you lucky San Francisco residents, they’re opening up a new showroom in March.

“Our goal is fairly straightforward — to be the most progressive, responsible and sustainable wood furniture manufacturer/retailer in America…With every piece we craft, we respect the natural character and imperfections of the tree we use. We let the natural shapes, holes, curves and “live edges” of the tree remain. Our craftsmen work to preserve the tree that once was — and the work-of-art that will be.” -Urban Hardwoods

Herman Miller® Enchord™ Desk

This is an excellent example of a desk that will keep you on top of clutter, namely because there’s no place to stash it except in neat piles along the lower shelf. If that seems entirely implausible, the handy mobile cabinet keeps the clean lines yet has ample storage for your odds and ends.

This may be the craziest thing I’ve seen all day. But, if you like the idea of working in a mobile pod then the Globus is for you.

Muji Aluminum Table

Remember how in the 90’s design was considered ‘modern’ if it was made out of stainless steel or some other metal? It was almost like a designer’s shortcut. It left a bad taste in my mouth related to anything masquerading as modern when it was just a regular product cast in metal. This, however, is certainly not the case with this lovely aluminum table from Muji. I love the subtle transition from the top of the table down to the slim line legs.

Muji, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

Sawhorse Worktable

Compared to the Mason Glass Top Desk priced at $1,150.00 with similar trestle table legs, this worktable is quite a steal. (The $1,150.00 table has much chunkier legs, but if you’re on a budget, skinnier legs do the job just fine.)

“Modern industry. An expansive glass tabletop rests upon two sleek steel-plated legs with a black nickel finish. Simple assembly.”

Convertible Compact Desk

This is a perfect solution for anyone short on space- you simply slide the top panel out when you need more work surface.

What looks like a 30″ cabinet converts to a 55″ full-size desk, making it a clever solution for studio apartments and multipurpose rooms. A quick slide of its top panel reveals hard-working amenities. When open, the top of the cabinet reveals generous storage space for a laptop, plus cubbies with removable dividers to stow paper clips, rubber bands and other smalls. Cord cutouts in back let you charge iPods, laptop and cell phones. Below are a storage drawer and one letter- and legal-size file.
