Desk/Work

Flip Table by No Problem

If your kitchen table doubles as a workspace (breadcrumbs in your laptop and wine stains on your papers) take note of this flexible table. All your work junk can be stored inside, ready to be squirreled away simply by closing the tops and drawers, and voilรƒย , you have a clean tabletop ready for dinner.

Note: No Problem is a Danish Collective, so I’m assuming that shipping might be an issue for folks in the US. You might want to shoot them a shipping inquiry before getting your hopes set.

Update: Monica from Bolia.com emailed in to say they are selling the table, and they can deliver it to any shipping company in Denmark. Thanks Monica.

Okay, so we usually try to avoid featuring things from IKEA, because you most likely already know what they have and it’s a no-brainer if you’re on a very tight budget. But this little desk seems like the perfect sort of thing for a cramped workspace, and with the inside lined in felt with pockets and paper holders, plus a cable management compartment, it’s suddenly sprung from so-so to a wow-that’s-a-big-bang-for-your-buck sort of item. Keep in mind you’d still have to buy the legs, but that’s not a lot to add on price wise.

Fold Desk

This engineered wood top desk has a pretty good sized work surface at 5′ wide. For those of you that like to spread out all your papers and such, that’s no small matter, and the $280 price tag means you can splurge on storage options. The steel sheet legs “fold” at a right angle.

Nice legs, right? Not only are they shapely, but they also fold down to make for easy storage. A very thin (15mm) honeycomb aluminum top makes for an extra light weight surface.

Paperweight Desk

Made entirely of 100% recyclable cardboard, this white gloss desk knocks the socks off of practically every other desk out there. At ยฃ151.00 (~$225), it’s super affordable, has a cable management system (very important) and can be assembled in a few minutes. If you move around a lot, the assembly/disassembly of furniture should not be taken lightly, nor should you miss the fact that this desk is super light and super strong. Now, if only a US retailer would pick it up, I’m sure exclamations of joy would be heard throughout the 50 states.

Library Desk

Hmm, what’s that you say? This desk is awfully similar to the Kant Desk? Why, yes, it certainly is. Does anyone know of an antique design that’s similar to this? It would be interesting if the Kant Desk took inspiration from an antique as well.

Our Library Desk, inspired by an antique design, offers unique convenience with its built-in bookshelf. The clever rear trough neatly organizes files, books, and anything that usually gets lost or needs a home, and displays them for instant reference and retrieval. Made from solid gray-washed sheesham wood, our eye-catching desk requires only minor assembly.

Offi Trundle Desk

Extra space is always at a premium, and if you work like I do, spreading out papers and such is a necessary evil to get a job done. This desk seems to tackle that problem with ease, with an extra drawer-like surface to give you the space you need. Plus, the idea of not necessarily having to straighten up (instead just push in the drawer) is a nice thought.

Surface Table

This is one super-incredibly-thin table. It costs fifty thousand freaking dollars. Just thought I’d hit you over the head with that right up front. Lose one of those little zeroes to the left of the decimal point, and suddenly it’s much more reasonable. I don’t mean to be such a critic (I know some people spend that much or more on a car) but I still have trouble absorbing that extra zero. That said, I appreciate the technology behind such an endeavor. It’s definitely a looker.

By using state-of-the-art autosport and aerospace technology, and exploiting the inherent rigidity of layered carbon fiber, Woodgate and Barnard have created an astonishing table that spans nearly 8 feet and has a thickness of less than 1/10 of an inch. Also available in a limited run of 99 with a length of nearly 10 feet.

Strut 70″ Work Table

Here’s a sort-of-affordable glass table with an interesting wood base. ‘Sort-of-affordable’ in this case means there’s no comma in the price tag.

Glass top floats on dramatically angled shesham wood legs with a matte walnut stain. Crossbar support connects the base with striking stainless steel hardware that’s an integral part of the design.

Seats four if using as a dining table.

UO Sawhorse Table Legs and Crawford Sawhorse

As one of you recently pointed out, there’s quite a few inexpensive trestle options out there, and you can get whatever sized top you want from a glass shop or hardware store.

On the left, is Urban Outfitter’s Sawhorse Table Legs, which at $38.00 for a set of two is a pretty good deal, and actually less expensive than the sawhorses on the right. However, the ones on the right are ‘real’ sawhorses, so they’re probably a bit more sturdy as well as adjustable. I actually used these yellow sawhorses as a work table base in my office/studio when I lived in Houston. It’s hard to tell, but from the side these sawhorses actually have a little Prouve-ish feel, or at least that’s what I thought of them (it’s the angled steel in a bright color, I think). If you don’t mind an industrial-edgy look, they do the job wonderfully and will hold up well over time, either in your studio/office space or in the garage for odd jobs.

Oak and Glass Trestle Table

Part of the new ‘Well Considered’ Collection from The Conran Shop, this table combines elegance and simplicity with a friendly price tag. (More items from the range will be posted within the next few weeks, but not so much that you’ll get sick of them.)

Terence Conran designed this simple, pared down trestle which is made in solid oak and combined with a clear glass top – ideal for sophisticated dining or as a chic desk at an excellent price.

Mayfair Steamer Secretary Trunk

I post this with considerable trepidation. On one hand, having a huge trunk to stuff all sorts of work papers and items plus a computer would be exceptionally nice in that you could close it all off and see a nice looking old trunk instead of a messy workspace. On the other hand it is absolutely huge and might look like an elephant in the corner, plus some people might assume you have a Real Doll in there, and that would not do your reputation any good whatsoever. So, it’s up to you to decide whether the risk is worth the advantage, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. (Also, if you’re into the antique steamer trunk thing, there’s a sizable collection of them (media stands, dressers, etc.) to check out at Restoration Hardware).

M’ovo Folding Table by Lapalma

While this does have a certain ironing-board feel to it, the promise of being able to easily shift from table to table-being-vertically-stored has a certain allure. For the price, I’d expect it to move from one position to the other extremely smoothly.

m’ovo table can be transformed by an easy movement: a second leg unfolds while the top is lowered to horizontal position. the solid oval base has concealed wheels so that the table can be shifted easily before use. when the flip-top is down, the wheels are lifted up and the base is stopped.

Fulton Desk, Bookcase, Media Console

This is bare bones minimal with a tiny bit of rustic wood to warm it up. I’d say the prices are reasonable, or at least they don’t hurt the eyes.

Fulton’s minimal lines and mixed materials make a streamlined, rustic-modern statement. The warmth of the richly-figured, reclaimed teak veneer top contrasts beautifully with the industrial black metal frame, finished in three steps for an oxidized effect.
