Credenzas/Sideboards

Rustic Storage Console

I’ve been looking for a table for my entry for things like mail, keys and other remnants from a long day of work. At the time, I wasn’t able to find anything, so I had something made by a local craftsman for under $300. It’s a nice sturdy piece, but it doesn’t have drawers, and that would definitely keep that area tidier than it is looking now.

This piece by WestElm is actually almost exactly the same size, but it has the drawers that I’m now wishing my custom console had. Constructed from solid mango wood, the piece has a nice muted look.

Reflect Sideboard, Black

You might have seen the natural oak version, especially as we’ve posted it before, but the black finish of this Reflect Sideboard is, shall we say, hot. Designed by Søren Rose Studio for Muuto, each drawer front has corners that curve outwards, reflecting light and capturing our collective interest.

The Sidebar by urbancase

Do you have an extra 3 grand lying around? If so, you could spend it on this handcrafted bar cabinet by urbancase. It has a sliding panel on the front that reveals compartments inside (perfect for glassware) plus a drop front drawer and a pull-out drawer for tools and such. Mostly it’s a great looking cabinet that doesn’t necessarily look like a liquor cabinet… and, there’s got to be some sort of pleasure in opening it up for the big reveal when you have guests.

Reflect Sideboard

Designed by Søren Rose Studio for Muuto, the Reflect Sideboard is heavily influenced by traditional Scandinavian furniture. Natural oak wood gives the piece warmth while the curved drawer fronts give detail and interest.

Also, don’t forget you could win an Eero Aarnio Ball Chair from Finnish Design Shop… you have until April 21, 2011.

Framed Buffet by moca

This varnished buffet by moca is composed of multiple compartments in several different colours, as you can see. While it’s a bit high on the budget scale, the color options are entirely want-worthy and would probably jazz up any dull room in a split second. A black steel frame supports the compartments and gives a nice line to contrast with the visual blocks of color.

Tactile Cabinet

Every time I go into The Conran Shop, I admire this cabinet. With such clean lines and simple white (or black) doors, it’s pretty much the perfect sideboard. It also has a subtle push-click closing that’s a nice touch. We originally posted this back in 2008, but I think it looks just as good as when it first hit the scene.

W81 x D20 x H29 in.
Also available in oak with glossy black doors.
10-12 week lead time.

Cherner Credenza

From the same company that produces the Cherner Chair comes this plywood construction credenza. Plywood construction doesn’t sound so fancy, but who needs fanciness when you get sturdy, good looking storage that’s built to last? It’s got mitered joinery and molded plywood pulls and legs that speak of quality with a nice midcentury vibe that we all (or most of us) know and love.

Atlantico Sideboard

Talk about a modern classic, this sideboard from Atlantico (the people behind De La Espada) is sure to be a piece that stays with you no matter how many times you move. There’s a choice of American white oak, American black Walnut or American cherry, all of which are sourced from sustainable forests. And if you’re balking at the price tag, be sure to look closely at the joinery; as is often the case, you get what you pay for.

13 Mater Gymnasium Pine Edition

The graphic colors and lines of the gym court sure make an eye catching pattern on this eco-friendly cabinet. Originally this series was created in 2008 using old floor boards (see Old Floor Board Edition, which is perhaps my favorite) and more recently Mater has added the Pine and Oak Editions. Plus, you might be happy to hear that Mater donates a percentage of profits to promoting sports in developing countries.

Soren Rose for Mater
Renewable pine and controlled Danish oak with water-based fixatives and varnishes.

Wrongwoods Small Sideboard

You probably recognize this little sideboard as a collaboration between designer Sebastian Wrong and artist Richard Woods. Brought together by Established & Sons’ program of ‘Collaborations’, they’ve certainly made an excellent collection of interesting cabinets together, varying in size and price, of course. The small sideboard (shown above) has two sliding doors and internal shelves.

designers: Sebastian Wrong, Richard Woods
59″ x 16″; height: 25.25″

Also, just so you know, the least expensive item in the collection is the Wrongwood’s Night Table with the price tag of $2,170.00… bad news for the budget conscious.

036 Tone Cabinet

If you don’t know much about parquetry except in relation to flooring, well, you’re in for a treat. Parquetry is the technique of applying wood to make decorative or geometrical patterns on things, so while you might have seen it all over the place as far as floors, maybe seeing it applied to a modern cabinet deserves a second glance. This cabinet utilizes the traditional techniques of parquetry on furniture, and, as Leif.designpark states, “is an attempt at producing furniture using effectively materials and skills established in the Japanese culture.” Sounds good to me.

Available in solid American Black walnut, American Cherry and Chestnut.
Manufacturer: De La Espada

Claude Modular Collection from Jonathan Adler

Modular systems can offer much needed versatility to your home, and this system does so with a distinct mid century flair. A half drawer unit plus half seat (not shown) would be ultra handy in a entryway, and the look of the two-2 drawer units on a double base (shown at top) could look very nice as a bedroom dresser or console. The only drawback is it can get a bit pricey when you start adding up the costs.

White or Ebony.

Single base (26″ wide x 17″ deep x 9″ high): $195.00
Double base (59″ wide x 17″ deep x 9″ high): $395.00
2 Drawer Unit (32.5″ wide x 17″ deep x 15.5″ high): $800.00
Tray unit: $150.00
Tray Seat Cushion: $195.00

Loadbearing MShelving

Customizable storage systems aren’t really a new thing, but Loadbearing’s MShelving does have a certain appeal with its industrial frame with pick-your-own door color options. With somewhat reasonable price points, it could fit your storage needs quite well.

MShelving… allows you to create your own look from a wide range of interchangeable colored steel and wood veneer sliding doors and half- and full- height drawers. MShelving was designed by Mathias Frei of Zurich, and is produced in Switzerland and Italy. It combines a sturdy, fairly industrial-feeling steel shelving system base with a refined, simple and attractive sliding door system… The shelving unit itself is made of galvanized steel. The wood finish doors are wood veneers (all from sustainable forests) on a particle board base with a galvanized steel handle edge, and the color and metallic finish doors are made of powder-coated steel.

Colors: Wooden Veneers, 21 Colors, Metal Finishes

Note: Keep in mind the prices shown below are for the units only, the price will increase depending upon how many doors you want and what wood or color option you choose.
