The Deja-Vu Chair by my favorite designer, Naoto Fukasawa, is on sale.

Made from mirror-polished aluminum with a contrasting oak wood back, this chair is a modern take on a traditional form and makes an attractive addition to a kitchen or dining area. It comes flat packed and is easy to assemble. Made by Magis.

Light and Stout Chairs by ref-use

Not only are these chairs made from wood that would normally end up in a landfill, but you also have the delightful option of hand picking the color you prefer for the sides of the chair.

Ref-use
, a small furniture company in Austin, TX. makes modern chairs from reclaimed plywood. The duo finds their waste in dumpsters of large wood manufacturers, then transform it into their two current products; the stout and the light.

Satellite Chair, White (Floor Samples)

At over half off, these floor sample chairs are a pretty good deal. Not sure how much shipping would be, but it might be worth checking out.

“These white powder coated steel chairs are really comfortable…and while they’re designed for an outdoor range, we think they look great inside too! These floor samples are regularly $600 each. We’ve got 6 left…hurry!”

Folding chair by Tove Adman

This is a pretty interesting chair. I’m a little perplexed by the shape, not entirely modern and it looks like an aeronautical device more than a chair, but with a leather cover it trims it up a bit and makes it look more interesting.

Available in polished or matte polished aluminum to be mounted on a wall. Available accessories: cover of reindeer skin or black leather imitation.

New Antiques by Marcel Wanders for Cappellini

I’m enjoying the New Antiques collection by Marcel Wanders. This chair in particular strikes my fancy. It’s a Klismos style chair (an ancient Greek form) merged with the turned wood technique, where wood is thrown on the lathe for the “knobby” appearance.

“A stunning takeoff on period furniture, the new antique wood-turned chairs and tables are available in matte black or white lacquer. the chair seats are upholstered with polyurethane foam and covered with a choice of smooth G908 or stamped leather of the same color choice as the frame. the seat is also available made of woven polyester belts with the cappellini logo.”

Carbon Chair (2004)

If you’ll look closer at this chair, you’ll see there’s no metal frame…it’s completely hand coiled from 100% carbon fiber and epoxy. As Bertjan Pot explains, “Every point on the rim of the chair is connected with all 4 points where the seat is connected to base-frame.”

‘Carbon Chair of Bertjan Pot and Marcel Wanders speaks of dedicated craftsmanship in connection to high tech materials and the material expertise only possible by personal excitement, passion and the love of “enlighted amateurs”.’

Non, Rubber Chair by Komplot Design

If the comfort and credential of being in the permanent collection of the MoMA isn’t enough, I’m sure that the fact you can turn over this chair and show the credits to your friends will make the price tag a bit easier to swallow (at least in theory, right?).

‘Non has won numerous design awards and is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Straight and simple in design, the stacking chair is comfortable thanks to the rubber it’s made of and the “built-in spring bands”. The underside of the chair features interesting molded rubber movie-style credits.
The chairs be stacked together to save space. NON can be used both indoors and outdoors. The pieces are completely waterproof and can be left outdoors permanently.’

Toy Armchair

Not such a bad price for an indoor/outdoor chair- I especially like the block-like angles.

“Inspired by the aesthetic of comics from the 1940s, Philippe Starck’s Toy Armchair (1999) strikes a balance between work and play, sophistication and childlike fantasy. Molded of a single piece of polypropylene, the Armchair is suitable indoors or out, for dining and lounge areas. Stackable up to 14 high for convenient storage, the Toy Armchair has a drainage hole to avoid seat puddles in rainy weather. Made in Italy.”

Map Chair

If you’ve got a lot of time on your hands, you might consider taking up a hobby, let’s say something like covering a chair with tiny pieces of a map. Or, if you don’t have the time you could of course buy this one. It’s slightly pricey, but considering that someone did this by hand, and that you’re paying for convenience, it’s not as bad as it could be.

“The chair shown here is hand covered in a vintage edition map of the east London area. The map is cut into small squares using the printed grid lines & then joined back together with the Thames river flowing across the seat & then across the back of the chair. This particular chair is in stock & ready to ship but is also available made to order with an location map you wish. It is fully glazed in a durable, wipe clean, child safe lacquer.”

“The Hida Tevere Chair provides comfortable seating in a design that transforms natural material into a sturdy, contemporary form. The Tevere Chair features Sugi wood, a tree native to Japan that provides a lightweight, but strong, construction material.”

Steelwood Chair, Magis

This chair sounds like it’s been through the wringer a few times, but the end result does not disappoint. It’s easy to appreciate how the curving steel plate and solid beech provide a rich contrast- they give detail to an otherwise simple form.

“The Steelwood chair is a radical assemblage of two traditional materials: steel and wood. Unlike its plastic siblings, it is aimed to become more delicate through time, acquiring a patina over uses and years. The steel forming process required deep technological research due to the unique and intricate form. It led to the final process which requires almost ten successive stamping stages in order to get the right curvature.”
