Dining and Side Chairs

NIKOLAUS

Hmmm. This chair is called the NIKOLAUS chair, and it looks to be inspired by the Rex chair designed in 1952 by award-winning Slovenian designer Niko Kralj. Well, I’m not sure if this is a happy accident but at $29, the price is certainly happy!

Ivar Chair

This chair is not conspicuously modern, but it is simple and lacking in unnecessary ornamentation. I think it’s a perfect little chair. And it’s only $20! You can’t even get a large pizza for less than that in times like these.

Slap a coat of white paint on this thing and you’re done.

Coco Chair – Lacquer, (Sale)

I know we’ve posted this before, but it’s on sale, so it gets another post…

“Japanese minimalism meets Italian nuance in the graceful and practical Coco Chair (2001). Constructed from durable beech plywood, the build is lightweight yet extremely sturdy for easy maneuvering in dining rooms. The continuous barrel backrest doubles as an armrest and can be hung on a tabletop to free up floor space for cleaning or storage.”

Love Chair

I know most people are crazy for Mr. Jonathan Adler, but somehow I didn’t get hit with the adoration bat when it comes to most of Mr. Adler’s designs. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s all good stuff, it’s just that nothing has struck me as an ‘i have to have it’ type thing. And then I see this, and somehow I finally got hit in the ‘noggin, if that’s the saying. This chair is so “sweet” it’s cute, and while I appreciate it for the irony (maybe?), I’m sure loads of people love it just ’cause it’s Adler.

Emeco Icon chair

Philippe Starck’s name is synonomous with design, at least to the general public, and I think this chair is a good example of why…reducing the chair form down to it’s simplest outline is so obvious that it is suprising it’s not been done before, yet reassuring that someone’s thought to do it. (Obvious in a good way, by the way.)

Materials: Brushed, powdercoated or polished aluminum

B-Pop Side Chair – Laminate

“Echoing the soft curves of mid-century modernism, Omar de Biaggio’s compact B-Pop Side Chair (2003) brings a sense of wit and impeccable styling to beech ply and stainless steel tubular seating.”

Indeed. I couldn’t say it better myself.

Beech plywood with melamine laminate; 18mm steel tubing with satin chrome finish.

Ming Square Arm Chair

This chair caught my eye, as most red modernish chairs do. It’d be a great accent chair in any room, or used in multiples around a dining table. Either way, it’s a winner.

JW-01 Chair

Nice walnut stacking chair on sale.
“When Jakob Wagner designed the JW-01 Chair he wasn’t only thinking how to create a sublime sense of balance with disparate elements. He was addressing how to design a chair at once beautiful and nearly indestructible, vividly comfortable yet functional for home as well as public spaces. Wagner’s talent for fusing engineering with aesthetic grace, solving the needs of the human body to find shelter in a seat, is exemplified by the JW-01. The seat back undulates gently to embrace the torso. The ample seat, with its waterfall edge, curves away from the thigh for optimal comfort. The sleigh-style stainless steel legs, 12mm solid yet thin, establish balance that is essential for secure sitting. The chairs can be stacked without damage.”

Verner Panton new matte s chair

I know this is nothing new but I thought I’d add it to the pile of great chairs that are reasonably priced. I’ve always seen this in a dining set but I’m toying with the idea of getting it for an office chair. Mind you, this is probably not the most ergonomic chair for sitting at for hours but if you’ve got a desk where you sit to pay bills or check email, it might just work.

Measurements: H” 33.5″/ 16.5″ seat x W 19.75″ x D 22.75″

Coco Chair

In this day and age of spending $200-$400 (or more) on a dining chair, I truly hope that people actually like what they buy. It’s certainly hard for me to imagine dropping thousands of dollars to seat 6 people, but when I think about if and when I do, the chair/ chairs would certainly have to meet some requirements. Which brings me to the point of this particular chair. It’s stylish, simple, and durable. And, this might sound silly, but I really like the fact that the barrel backrest/armrest can be hung on a tabletop so you can easily sweep underneath (I hate sweeping around chairs, or moving them aside).

So. There you go.

“A single piece of solid beech wood acts as both the back leg and backrest support to provide maximum strength. Available in a versatile stained ebony, as well as a striking red. The lacquer is repeatedly applied for a thick, consistent finish.”

Mummy chair

I really like these Mummy chairs. Wrapped in polyester ribbon, these bent beech-wood chairs add humor and maybe even sort of a high art feel, if you could call it that. (If anyone chooses to recreate, I’d love to see pictures.) Seat and backrest are padded with polyurethane foam.

Designed by Peter Traag.
