Ceiling/Pendant

Take-off Lights

Ooo, this light is fun! You’re in charge of the final design pattern, so put your designer hat on and start brainstorming. Each lampshade is made of two sheets of paper with a fine pattern of laser stitches. Punch out the small triangle pieces to create whatever pattern you wish. Yes, you’d have to do a fair amount of punching, but it’d be worth it, right? After a little assembly, hang it up and then stand back and admire your hard work. (Note: free worldwide shipping, so don’t be dissuaded by the ‘โ‚ฌ’ in the price.)

Lovely, aren’t they? Don’t get too attached if you’re on a tight budget, but if you’ve a healthy allotment for pendant lights, then add these blown borosilicate glass lights to your list. Egg Carton Pendants

These small pendant lights are made of recycled cardboard egg cartons, and that’s good news in itself, but it also means the cost is very affordable at $48 each. Mix the three different styles for an eclectic feel above a small dining table or bar or stick with just one in a special spot, either way you can feel good about supporting sustainable practices within the lighting marketplace.

Capitol Pendant Lamp

Whoa. This lamp commands attention with its size: at 26″ diameter and a 22″ height it won’t fade into any room’s background. A matte carbon aluminum shade has a white interior to maximize the light, and that neutral combination goes anywhere, with any color scheme. Best of all, the price sneaks under the $300 mark, so you can afford to have a hefty statement lamp (or two) above your dining table without a hefty price tag. Nice.

Hide Pendant Lights

If you’re vegan, just skip reading this post or spending too long looking at these pendant lights. For the rest of us, you might notice that these lamps are made of laser cut leather (locally sourced, mind you), hand molded and hand dyed to the correct color. As with other fine leather goods, they’re not inexpensive, yet for certain rooms or environments, they just might be worth the price.

Apparatus Lighting

Holy smokes. Apparatus is hitting exactly the right note with their modern-yet-timeworn lighting collection, and if you have a healthy budget, you’ll definitely want to consider one of their chandelier/pendants for one heck of a statement. Using a vintage sensibility, designer Gabriel Hendifar and partner Jeremy Anderson create fixtures using aged brass, hand-etched glass, leather, and porcelain to create these eclectic fixtures. A few pieces are below, but do check out their website for the full collection and variations on each design: Apparatus.

Perseo Suspension Lamps

If you happen across the frosted version of the Perseo Suspension Lamp, you might assume at first glance that it is made of paper. Not a surprise, as Japanese paper lanterns were the inspiration behind these mouth blown Murano glass pendants. Now, considering each lamp is mouth blown, they aren’t inexpensive, however, considering their faceted surface and fragility, it’s easy to make sense of the price tags.

Stanley 3 Pendant

The nice thing about this Stanley 3 Pendant, other than the fact that it’s hand-spun in Birmingham and made of solid polished copper, is that it’s not immediately recognizable. Often certain pieces of certain designers will be used so much that you tend to get sick of it. So, no matter how wonderful a light fixture is upon its initial release, after seeing it twenty times in twenty different spaces, it looks less special and more like a stamp of ‘I-have-a-designer-light-fixture’- do you know what I mean? So, back to this pendant. It’s so pure and unadorned that the material itself steals the show, and that is incredibly refreshing. Available in three different diameters and also a hammered finish.

Brass T from Allied Maker

Nowadays there are more lighting options than ever- you don’t have to buy from the big box stores, as there are many designers/makers doing their own selection of ceiling pendants and lamps. This Brass T fixture from Allied Maker is just about as simple as you can get, and was inspired by 19th century gas lanterns that used to illuminate old saloons. With hints of the same materials as the You Make It: Lindsey Adelman Chandelier (my own version shown here), it has me itching to get out my pliers and electrical tape, but, thankfully, there’s no need because it’s actually pretty affordable, especially considering the custom lengths available.

Numerouno Pendant Lamp

This Numerouno Pendant Lamp made an appearance on some design sites a few weeks back, but, before we go any further, I should warn you that it’s not available for shipping to the US or Canada. However, it is available to buy within the EU, so you’re lucky if you reside in one of those countries or the surrounding area.

Now, onto the lamp: the simple materials (corrugated cardboard, wire plastic, nylon thread) make for a lightweight light source that has a low environmental impact. The length and overall minimal silhouette makes it a great choice for above a kitchen island, dining table, or desk, and all you’ll need to provide is the 21W tube, which will emit more light than two 75W light bulbs.

Grain Pendant

At first glance, this Grain Pendant looks like it has a simple aluminum shade. However, take a closer look and you’ll see that the shade is formed over a wooden mold that has been sandblasted, and, during the shade’s metal spinning process, the patterns of the wood grain are impressed on the shade’s underside. Read more about the Grain Pendant’s case study over at Brendan Ravenhill’s site.

Punk Pendant

Any guesses as to what mystery material this pendant’s shade is made of? Here’s a hint: there’s a variety of copper alloys involved, and the item is originally intended to give off a specific sound. Drum roll….. it’s a cymbal! A vintage 10″ cymbal, in fact. Pretty smart use for a cast-off, so if you run across any on your next thrift store trips, you know what to do. From Workerman.

Form Pendants

Well, these pendants sure look impressive grouped together. They hint at the classic industrial bulbs of the past yet have a distinct modern feel thanks to the simple cord treatment. Each one is made from mouth-blown white opal glass and requires basic hardwiring (so, to do a cluster of lights you might want to call in an electrician).

Smoked Grey Table Vessel Light

The Plumen bulb looks especially appealing in this blown glass form by Decode, doesn’t it? The subtle color tint softens the light ever so slightly while the glass gives an irregular reflection that accentuates the form. In other words, it’s pretty. Also, don’t forget you can purchase the Plumen Bulb separately for your own existing light fixture should it need an upgrade.

Drum Lamp

Upcycling! If you’ve watched any home shows (say, on HGTV) you’re likely to have seen some upcycled stuff, with some of the results semi-impressive and other attempts being downright awful. Now, I know I’ve seen used washing machine drums upcycled into lights and tables before, but it certainly wasn’t executed in such a precise manner, as shown above/below.

Powder-coating, rather than hand spray paint, helps convey a higher end look, as does the matching color cable and acrylic sheet diffusers. Tip of the hat goes to you, Willem Heeffer, for acing an upcycling project and offering more for sale for those of us that can’t be bothered with doing it ourselves.
