Carved Wood Birds by Roost

While Roost has done many a carved animal, including a Carved Wood Deer Head and many wall-worthy Carved Wood Trophy Heads, now they’ve applied their expertise to a collection of birds.

“Various carved wood birds flock together in Roost’s feather-free
menagerie. These life-like and in some cases life-size birds are
hand-carved from solid basswood. The wood is left unfinished to
highlight its natural grain. Minor assembly required.”

Design Public Crew / Los Angeles / Photobooths

Last night, Design Public’s Matt & Drew (middle & right) and I were all hanging out in Wallpaper’s Best City of 2008, Los Angeles, for a little Standard Hotel / 7Grand / Dresden Room / House of Pies action, when I forced the guys into a photobooth.

I love photobooths because the resulting pictures look fairly consistent regardless of time period. I have a pretty good collection of photo strips, starting with one of me and my mom when I’m 4 years old. I’ve been wanting to find a good way to display them, and I was thinking of enlarging them and putting them on my wall, almost like wallpaper. I recently discovered that someone’s already done that, and it looks pretty great.

Dreamgate Headboard/Wall Art

This light, modernist wall application reinterprets the headboard, a traditionally heavy furniture piece. The surface of reinforced cork is screenprinted by hand, graphically inspired by star formations and vintage tufted leather furniture. As a headboard or art object, the long proportion encourages creative placement in any environment. Dreamgate is reusable and can be trimmed easily to fit beds ranging from children’s to king size. Self-adhesive, non-marring backing makes installation simple.

Materials: Reclaimed cork from the bottle-stopper industry and water based ink

Dimensions: 2’h x 10’w x 1/8″d, Weight: 4lbs

Price: $160.00

Domestic Trophies

Here’s a fuzzy art piece that’s quite a different take on the traditional hunting trophy. Rachel Denny hand makes these trophies in her studio, so each will be unique in color and pattern. There’s also some angora rabbits she’s working on that are worth taking a look at.

Domestic Trophy (deer mount) series are between $500 and $600 depending on size and intricacy.

‘Help Me’ and ‘Thought’ Digital Art Prints

I think some people forget that visual art can not only make your walls and rooms less empty and a little ‘prettier’, but it can also mean something to you, and evoke a particular feeling that you have upon viewing it. Much like a smell or a song, it’s a package of colors, images and/or textures that brings emotion or thought, so there can be a lot more complexity involved than just figuring out what print from your local craft or furniture store matches your wall color.

That brings me around to my originally intended subject of digital artwork, which is becoming exponentially available nowadays, and opens up possibilities of some pretty good stuff that doesn’t cost thousands of dollars. I like these two from
Amka Shop, but there’s lots more, so I encourage checking it out:

“To make the most of these digital works of art, we offer large-format (poster) printing on thick, soft tarp, which will give your interior decoration a hint of feeling, and originality. We only print &#34luxury&#34 editions, and our prints are also available on laminated paper, aluminium, solid pvc, and pvc sticker, in limited editions of 200, for sale only on our site.”

‘Help Me’ (left) 90 cm x 130 cm, 175 &#8364
‘Thought’ (right) 90 cm x 130 cm, 175 &#8364

(shipping to the US will run around 22 &#8364 or so for the sizes cited)

Felt Birds

This would be a delightful way to add some energy and movement to a blank space in a room.

Each bird is 6″ long, with a 4″ wingspan, and comes with a 15.5″ satin ribbon. (When the ribbon is doubled up, the bird hangs at a distance of about 7″.)

Heart by Renate Hattinger Keramik

I just saw the
Think Tank designed by Renate Hattinger Keramik on, which led me to the Golden Heart pictured above. Absolutely one of the best things I’ve seen; my only wish is that it would a bit more affordable.

“Golden Heart is part of the series Human Interior. Human Interior are porcelain containers in form of the central human organs, heart and brain. The highly specialized organs heart and brain designed by nature are symbols for life, intelligence, love. The invisible inside becomes visible and gets a concrete emotional meaning by careful processing and refinement of the object’s surface. The objects are not only to be admired on pedestals and in showcases but to be used and filled.”

Reveal Lamp by Adam Frank

Living in an vast expanse of concrete? Don’t have enough windows or trees? This lamp creates the effect of moving branches on a tree outside a window.

“As air currents pass through the projector, the branches of the projected tree appear to sway in a gentle, morning breeze. An ideal solution for small, urban spaces, and rooms that could use a “view”.”

Approx. 8″W x 6″L x 8″H
