Van Amburgh Stool by Sam Johnson

We posted this years ago (’06) and it needed some new shiny pictures to get your attention again. So, no, it’s not new, but it’s a good stool for a good price.

Named after the famous lion tamer Isaac van Amburgh, this stackable stool, or side table, is made from rotation-molded polypropylene.

Spacecube

What a steal- one, two, three or four of these would function quite well as a table/ottoman, and with removable slipcovers, it’d be a cinch to clean up (or change) your living area.

“The latest multifunctional idea from Danish designer Stine Engelbrechtsen is the Space Cube, where simplicity and ingenuity meet in a soft fabric-covered block that can function as a stool, table or ottoman. At 8 lbs, the Space Cube is also light enough to move easily and often, and can be used in multiples, whether in public waiting rooms or in children’s areas where soft surfaces are called for. The cube is resilient yet solid, and is upholstered in a blend of linen and cotton that offers visual texture, a soft hand and enduring strength. The slipcover is easily removable for dry cleaning.”

Cell foam and polyester fiber; upholstery, 74% cotton, 20% viscose, 6% linen.

Available in Anthracite, Brown, Lime or Red Orange.

Low Cut Stool

I suppose this could be considered the I B Pop chair’s side table and/or coordinating stool, and for the price, it’s worth posting.

“This solid stool or side table (it doesn’t matter what you use it for: It works brilliantly as either.) has a secret. low cut can fold flat in a fraction of a second. Ideal as extra seating you can bring out just when you need it or as outdoor furniture that can be stored away neatly until the weather finally lets you sit outside. When low cut is unfolded it takes up almost no space at all.”

Maximum load 150kg.

360 x 345 mm

Available in (outside/inside) Blue/black, black/blue, white/red , white/white ,red/white

Tribo Stool

“True to form follows function, [Ilse Lang’s] Tribo Stool (2001) features a seat with three open slots that allow the stools to be stackable up to three high. The result is an interesting design that serves a very real purpose. The Tribo Stool was inspired by traditional wooden stools used by cattle herding cowboys, or “gauchos” in Brazil, when gathered around campfires and drinking maté, a tea often enjoyed from a shared hollow gourd. The Tribo Stool stands on chromed steel legs with a seat in a choice of two Brazilian hardwoods, Tauari and Tamburi. Made in Brazil.”

Nendo: Wind Bentwood Stool

Lovely little stool that would be well worth the price paid.

“Nendo is a japanese design office named after the japanese word for clay. Free-formed, and flexibility, adaptability in the scene of design is their motto. Among their projects is the stool Wind conceived to obtain the maximum structural performance with plywood. As if it was a sheet, left to dry, waving in a summer breeze, the form of this stool is designed for maximum structural performance, using minimal elements.”

Taburet M Stacking Stool

These stools are understatedly elegant AND affordable. I can picture them in an office, used as dining chairs, or even just in a living room as extra seating. Currently on sale, the Taburet M Stacking Stool is available in Birch, Cherry and Black.

“The Taburet M Stacking Stool is almost pure abstraction, making minimum impact on space and redefining “seat” in the simplest sense. Yet, the stool is quite substantial, offering a low, comfortable seat suited to a retail setting, showroom, gallery or reception area. The Taburet M Stacking Stool was designed by Danish craftsman/designer Jorgen Moller, who, along with Bruno Mathsson, became one of the early leading exponents of modern Danish design. Like Mathsson, Moller sought new solutions rather than drawing from tradition, and created light, minimal structures.”

Knoll Sale/Prince Aha Stool

Knoll’s having a sale until tomorrow so now’s your last chance to get a Barcelona Chair, Tulip table or other Knoll designs on the cheap! (I’m using the word “cheap” in a relative nature).

The Aha Stool (seen peeking from behind the case study bed) was designed by Philippe Starck and is now very much within financial reach for most of us). The great thing about this stool is that you can use it for seating, table or storage, and it can be used both indoor or out.
