Ile w153 Table Lamp by Wastberg

In love with a lamp… that should be a song title, shouldn’t it? The Ile w153 Table Lamp, designed by Inga Sempe, aims straight for our hearts, as it can be clamped to a ledge or tabletop, mounted on the wall, or set upon a flat surface. The shade moves smoothly, as it has a magnetic connection to the base. Now, the question is, just which color would be perfect for your bedside, reading chair, or desk? (Two grey/brown lamps are calling my name, I think.)

Fundamental Lamp

Stripes! It evokes a certain Memphis Group flavor, don’t you think? And, yes, you could probably make something similar if you had the tools (so, go ahead, make one). If you know you’re too lazy, then this little lamp by Brendan Timmins will set you back $160. A small price to pay for a cheery, striped light with a pink cord, don’t you think? Mushroom Lamp

This cute little Mushroom Lamp hides an iPhone dock in its base. How handy is that? I’d say it would be perfect beside your bed or desk, as it gives you a place to charge your phone along with an ambient light for reading or working. Plus, it’s smart how you only see the docking station when you flip it over… when it is in its upright ‘lamp only’ position, the dock is hidden.

Capello Lamp

Let’s just get this straight: this lamp is $260*. Compared to the Love Letter Light (also by molo), which ran around the $400 mark, that’s a bargain. Now, consider its marble base, which is actually a byproduct from the base for the Arco floor lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers. Next, the little paper cap (“cappello” in Italian) is attached to the steel wire with a simple magnetic connection, which allows you to slide and tilt it into any position. Do you remember that it costs $260*? Such a nice price for a lovely little lamp. And, if you like, you can remove the steel wire and paper cap to move the light to other places, say, a wine bottle or a small hole drilled into a wood surface. More shots below.

Beau Pendant Light

David Trubridge is well known for his puzzle-like, open-weave light fixtures. With the new Beau Pendant, the same overlapping segment idea is used to direct light downwards, hiding the light source. The light is flat-packed, keeping with the company’s longstanding eco-conscious aim, and is available in a natural, caramel, or black stain.

Nanoleaf LED Light Bulbs

Have you seen any of the Nanoleaf LED light bulbs yet? What about the Nanoleaf Smart Ivy? Most LED light bulbs are not attractive, and the Nanoleaf isn’t particularly pretty either. However, it is faceted (=dodecahedron) with tiny LED lights in the shape of a regular bulb, and that makes it interesting. There are different variations in size and color, plus the Smart version mentioned before, which you can control wirelessly via your device. Kinda fun, huh?

Holmes Sconce

It doesn’t take much deductive reasoning to select this Holmes Sconce from Schoolhouse Electric as one of the better options in the marketplace. It might be inspired by the classic candle sconce in the days before electricity, but the minimalist lines in its steel backplate marks it firmly in the present. Make it your own by choosing a specialty bulb, and know that the smaller size would fit almost anywhere you need an extra source of light.

Boya Lamp

This little lamp takes its inspiration from the sea- think lighthouse beacons and buoys. At 8.5″ high and 7.5″ in diameter, it’s small enough to fit on a desk or large side table without taking up a lot of visual space, especially as there’s no traditional cloth lampshade. The base is made of reclaimed American red and white oak beams and the shade is thick, tinted grey glass.

Ava Wall Sconce

No one wants to spend a load of money on a wall sconce, but when you combine a walnut backplate with a brass arm and a hand-sewn leather shade, it’s awfully hard to resist. Measuring in at the perfect size (17″ arm length), the Ava Wall Sconce would be an excellent companion to your bedside or favorite armchair. The half shade angles in various directions for a direct or indirect glow, and a simple on/off knob with a brown twisted cloth cord keeps the look humble.

Well Planter and Babylon Light

Question: How much do you want a light fixture that is also a planter? Answer: a) sort of a lot b) it’d be nice c) give it to me now. I’m wavering between a and b, because if plants were at eye level, I’d be less likely to forget to water them. You, however, would probably be ace at your plant care, and would therefore have a beautiful, thriving plant (or plants) to make a fantastic lighting statement. Designed by Ryan Taylor, of Object/Interface, the Well Planter and Babylon Light both feature space to plant greenery directly on the shade with an opaque diffuser to further soften the glow.

Wings Lamps by Haim Evgi Design Studio

While these lamps are inspired by different bird wings, some of us may tend towards a stronger zoomorphic interpretation, for the lamp can appear to stand like a bird, with the solid oak shade as its head. A thin iron leg and base gives the lamp a perched stance, which takes up minimal room on a desktop or tight floor plan.
