Plumen 003 LED Light Bulb

A sexy lightbulb? Really? Well that’s an adjective everyone else is using, so, sure, it’s, uh, sexy. Let me introduce you to the Plumen 003. It is energy-efficient (it’s an LED) and gives off a focused, direct light directly below along with a softer sidelight. Similar to candlelight, it has a warm glow thanks to its center gold element. Unlike candlelight, it will last 10,000 hours. That means it will provide just the right amount of flattering ambient light to your oh-so-lovely features for a very, very long time. Add one above a workspace or add a few above a table; just be prepared for some ooo’s and ahh’s when your guests notice your “sexy” lightbulbs.

Nanoleaf LED Light Bulbs

Have you seen any of the Nanoleaf LED light bulbs yet? What about the Nanoleaf Smart Ivy? Most LED light bulbs are not attractive, and the Nanoleaf isn’t particularly pretty either. However, it is faceted (=dodecahedron) with tiny LED lights in the shape of a regular bulb, and that makes it interesting. There are different variations in size and color, plus the Smart version mentioned before, which you can control wirelessly via your device. Kinda fun, huh?

Beam Smart Projector

Screw the Beam Smart Projector into a light socket and then use your smartphone to watch movies, play games, or share content. That’s right, it’s a projector built into a compact casing that fits into a light socket. Maybe you’ll put it above the kitchen island to watch a food prep video directly on the counter, or above the dining table to play games, or maybe you’ll prefer to place it on a table (with included power cable) for projecting onto the wall or ceiling for movies and videos. You can also program Beam to run certain ‘if this then that’ rules, which opens up a lot of fun options for you and your family. Check it out over at Kickstarter.

EcoSmart Dimmable LED Downlight

Before the holiday break, my home’s recessed can lights looked like a sad sack of characters past their prime: their springs that had lost their ‘spring’ and the plastic trim had yellowed, giving the appearance that the lights were much older than their dozen years. My home is pretty modern- it’s a very open plan, loft-like townhome- and the lights just weren’t cutting it. Plus, we (my husband and I) wanted to upgrade to LEDs, so we bit the bullet and decided to purchase new lights.

Bulb Flashlight

Say what? It’s a flashlight and a low-heat LED rechargeable bulb? Sounds strange, but it makes sense, I guess. Extend the telescopic handle to use as a flashlight (up to 3 hours) or use it as a bulb in any standard screw-in light fitting. Like I said, strange, but seemingly practical. Using only six watts of power, the bulb is equivalent to a 40w incandescent bulb.

LIFX Smart Bulb

Maybe you heard about the LIFX bulbs via Kickstarter, or maybe you’ll be jumping up and down right after you learn that you can control this light bulb with your smartphone. Each energy efficient LED light bulb bulb uses WiFi to connect to multiple devices through an app, so you can control the lumens, color temperature and range. That means a very customized lighting program, all thanks to a single bulb. Available now for preorder; ships August/September 2013.

Crystal Bulb

What to do with a boring pendant light? Why, upgrade the bulb to crystal, of course. Lee Broom recently unveiled his cut-lead crystal bulbs this year in Milan; each one is individually hand blown by Cumbria Crystal, the last producer of handmade English full lead crystal. The bulb fits any standard E27 fitting, and is available to purchase alone ($175) or with a brushed brass pendant ($275).

AudioBulb

Hmm, an AudioBulb. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a light bulb that has a speaker in it. It’s an LED light bulb, of course, so it’ll last for years (as it should be if you’re shelling out a Franklin for it). Music plays wirelessly from your iPod/iPhone/auxiliary input source and installation is simple. Twist in the AudioBulb in a lamp or a light socket and then connect your device to the standalone base. You can have up to 8 bulbs and 2 different zones. Sounds like a pretty good idea, doesn’t it?

Plumen Lightbulb

Update: A+R Store now carries the Plumen ($30), fyi.

Original post:
I saw these lightbulbs in person yesterday at the Temporium, and found them quite impressive. If you’re not familiar with the Plumen, you’ll be glad to know that the Plumen bulb uses 80% less energy and lasts 8x longer than incandescent bulbs. Plus, it looks nice and doesn’t need covering up.

You U.S. folks might be a little frustrated though, as they’re not yet available in the states, but U.K. and European residents can purchase them directly through Plumen’s website for ยฃ19.95/โ‚ฌ29.95.
