Sound Systems

Eklipse Music System

I swear, make a music player with an iPod dock, paint it shiny black (and keep it minimal) and you have yourself a willing audience waiting to send you money. It always helps if it sounds good, of course. There’s a bunch of Sonoro Systems on sale through Gilt Groupe, so if you’re one of those willing, you might want to take a look.

Lacie Sound2 USB Speakers

I swear by my Lacie Firewire Speakers. They’re self-powered, sound good, and look like little smoke stacks. I won’t think twice about buying another set if they ever break. But this new, updated version looks very tempting:

Pig Speaker by Idea

Too cute. Not only do I eat pork, but I think they’re totally adorable as inanimate objects. Conflict of interest with earthy-crunchy types? Maybe, but I’d rather this than a talking carrot. Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up” just took on new meaning.

Q speakers

So, you audiophiles, what do you think of this? I’ve never claimed to be an expert on sound, but this has some serious style to it. While currently it’s available through special order, there are a few Limited Editions in Silver Beech that are priced at $1600. Not cheap, certainly, but it looks like the people behind the speaker have put some thought into sustainability and quality, and we all know you get what you pay for (usually).

Designed by Grier Govorko and hand-crafted in New Zealand from real wood, Q-speakers use highly efficient Class D amplification to deliver 60W of smooth audio in stereo to you, the listener. Hidden from view, the mid/high speakers create an ‘all-around’ sound, the listener can be in front, behind, to the side and the sound remains perfect. This is made possible by what we call ‘reflective-sound’. Dave Levine, the genius responsible for the Red Hot Chili Peppers live sound, dreamt up this unique concept. Q-speakers adopted it.

Limited Edition collection starts at $1600.00

Ceramic Speakers by Joey Roth

These technically aren’t available right this very second*, but you can pre-order them now and receive them in early November.

Typical speakers are designed to play even the most compressed or poorly recorded track. They gloss over the details that give high-resolution music its depth. The Ceramic Speakers’ custom-made drivers, porcelain and cork enclosures, and Tripath amplifier reveal every nuance. They will show the difference between lossless and mp3 files, and will unlock vinyl’s richness.

System includes: Two ceramic speakers, Amplifier based on the Tripath 2024 T-Amp with gold-plated binding posts, 1/8? input, cast iron base, 16-gauge oxygen-free copper speaker cables with banana plug termination, interconnects for RCA and 1/8? sources

*eff it. If everyone else is going to post these speakers before they are available to buy, then I will too.

Vers 1.5r Sound System

This looks to have a compact footprint and great style, so you have little excuse for settling on less-than-par sound for your iPod.

By popular demand, we’ve created the ideal compact AM/FM sound system for iPod with the full, rich sound you’ve come to expect from Vers. The 1.5R is a true ‘hybrid’: great as a bedside alarm, even better in the kitchen, den or office… anywhere great sound belongs.

Vers 1.5R is available in Cherry, Natural Walnut, Dark Walnut, Bamboo, Black Gloss and White Gloss finishes. Finished by hand, each Vers system takes over a week to build and each one is unique. It sounds as good as it looks; there’s simply no substitute for the rigid, 9 mm thick walls of a Vers cabinet for accurate sound reproduction.

Ferguson Hill mini speakers

Admittedly, I know next to nothing about sound equipment. I’m content with my cheapo turntable and the speakers that came with my cd player. Not only do these look really cool, but I’m told they are worth the high price.

Thanks Mike!

GLOW Amp One

I admit I know next to nothing about audio/stereo equipment. Other than the fact that the sound system I have sounds a whole lot better than just the built-in speakers that come with the TV or computer, if you asked me any other questions I’d be blank. But I do know a few proper audiophiles, and they think highly of tube amps. I’d be curious to see how it sounds compared to what the rest of us have…it certainly looks pretty nice.

About the size of a shoe box, the versatile and simple to use GLOW Amp One is a classic stereo tube amplifier – with a twist – every GLOW amplifier comes equipped with a USB input so you can use your computer, iPod, cd player or even television as a HI FI music source. Just add speakers, the results are amazing.

Not only does it provide the smooth, silky and detailed sound that tube amps are famous for, it looks stunning. The GLOW Amp One is one stereo that is artful enough in design to display as part of your living environment. Forget those ugly “black box” stereo components. The GLOW Amp One simply sparkles… nothing catches attention more than the subtle glow of those little tubes!

The GLOW Amp One is hand crafted and built to last, but costs a fraction of what you would expect to pay for designer audio gear. Comes in your choice of eye popping colors and for a limited time GLOW is offering a free iPod docking station with every purchase.

11.5″ (L) x 5.5″ (W) x 6″ (H).

Phonofone II Ipod Speaker

We’ve probably all seen this before as a concept piece, but they’re now in production and taking pre-orders for shipment in April.

The Phonofone amplifies the sound that comes out of your earbuds and is made entirely from ceramic. Not only does it function entirely without electricity (other than the Ipod, ofcourse), but it’s quite a stunning sculptural piece as well.
