Cashmends, Tweedmends

We’ve featured Cashmends before, but they’re just too good to forget. We all have favorite sweaters, and it’s so very sad when they get worn spots. Cashmends are iron-on patches that spruce up the elbows (or other areas) so you can continue wearing your warmest garments. There’s now Tweedmends as well, so you have the opportunity to upgrade an older blazer or jacket as well as your sweaters. Personally, I’m tempted to buy a few just to make some boring sweaters a little more interesting (a la Chinti and Parker). Elbow patches!

UNDO Laces

So, did you know that a shoe creates a lot of environmental damage? Raw materials plus an intense manufacturing process means that those things we wear on our feet have a big carbon footprint (typical shoe = 30 pounds of CO2). Alarming, isn’t it?

UNDO Laces aims to offset that carbon footprint by purchasing credits from a wind energy, solar energy or reforestation project on your behalf. You get a pair of UNDO Laces, too, of course. Mini magnets installed in each end of the shoelace makes them easy to change out for color matching (it also eliminates those bothersome plastic ends hitting your ankles when you walk. Am I the only one with that issue? Back the project on Kickstarter.

Shadowplay Galaxy Scarves

We’ve featured Slow Factory’s silk/cotton Scarves before, but just in case you’d like a lower price point, the NYC based company Shadowplay has a nice selection of galaxy print scarves as well. However, don’t go thinking it’s an easy Mother’s Day gift option, as some of the designs won’t ship until the beginning of June.

No Line No Wave Scarf Collection

If you happen to have a loved one that likes scarves and other strange, artistic things, then the No Line No Wave Scarf Collection should be on your list of birthday/anniversary/special event gift ideas. Glasgow-based studio Briggs & Cole invited twelve Scottish creatives to contribute designs, and the result is an odd-yet-wonderous array of silky squares. Be forewarned, though, as each scarf is produced as a limited edition of ten each, sold only in sets of two.

Underfuse Iron-On Reflective Strips

Does your favorite workout gear have reflective strips? Mine certainly don’t, but that’s about to change. Underfuse Iron-On Reflective Strips are easy to apply and will help make sure you don’t get run over by a bus/truck/inattentive driver when you’re out walking your dog or running at night. Iron a few strips on your jacket, bag, or workout clothes and stay visible. Also, Underfuse also has an iron-on pocket for your smartphone and/or keys, just in case you’d like to further customize your clothing.

Touch Tonic

Why is this person painting their gloves with fingernail polish? Pfft, we know better than to assume that, and we’re probably thinking whatever they’re doing to their gloves has to do with cold weather and our devices, and we’d be right. It’s Touch Tonic, and you paint it on your favorite gloves so that you can connect with your device while keeping your fingers warm. It’s better to use it on darker fabrics, as it’s not completely clear, fyi, and each application lasts several weeks.

Definition Scarf

NYC Transit Kerchief

Maybe you have the NYC Subway map memorized, and, if so, good for you. The rest of us rely on our smart phones when we’re in the city, and, oh, the horror when our battery dies and there’s not a reliable map to be found street side. If we had a NYC Transit Kerchief (or a Crumpled City Map), we could pull it out of our bag or pocket and then proceed to our destination without missing a beat. (We’ll avoid thinking about what happens when you’re sick and you badly need a tissue as well as directions.)

T.J. Wilcox In the Air Silk Scarf

If you pay attention to the art world, you might have heard of T.J. Wilcox and his panoramic film installation In the Air, 2013, at the Whitney Museum of American Art. If you haven’t, don’t worry, as that’s not a prerequisite to purchase a still printed on this 100% silk scarf you see above. However, do feel free to dazzle anyone who appreciates the scarf with your knowledge of the installation- they could probably use a little more ‘culture’.

Slow Factory Scarves

What do you get the person who loves cosmology and/or fashionable things? One of these scarves from Slow Factory, of course. The 30% Silk/70% Cotton scarves start at a reasonable $80, while the 100% silk scarves go up to the $200 price point. Might be a nice Mother’s Day gift, perhaps? Or a reward for doing your taxes? Hmm, bookmark it in either case.
