Media Storage

Soorikian Long Console

Finding a modern media stand is no easy task. I know this personally, of course, and am quite familiar with the many requirements needed to house those precious electronic boxes that magic images up on the tv screen. Dimensions, ventilation, wire management, and above all, how it looks… all these things are important. So, that’s why this console caught my eye. It’s certainly easy on the eyes, with a lovely walnut finish and a low profile, with slats to allow for ventilation (and visual interest). The compartments can be fitted with a drawer or a space specifically for electronics.

Walnut finish.

Pricing around $3,800.00.

Cork Media Console

We’ve been fans of Iannone Design for quite some time now, so it’s no surprise that this low storage unit would eventually have its turn in the spotlight. Just under 2 feet, it’s low enough to fit a good sized flat screen above or on it without sacrificing a reasonable viewing height, and the cork doors and plywood core edges add just the right amount of natural elements to balance out the tech.

Two compartments (each with an adjustable shelf) and wire/vent holes in the maple back.

Designer/Manufacturer: Iannone Design
Material: Amber bamboo/cork/maple plywood.

Indie Furniture

Indie Furniture certainly has hit a lot of the right targets with their new customizable furniture. Rather than selling a completed product, Indie Furniture provides universal shelving joints that ultimately require you to put together yourself with your own provided wood. The benefit of this is that you can customize your shelving to your exact needs, use any type of wood you desire, save a whole lot on shipping, and enjoy the task of putting together your own set of furniture. Customization is done through their online configurator which tells you final dimensions, how many connectors are needed, the cost of the connectors, and how many wood panels are neededโ€”all in one convenient PDF! Brilliant I’d say.

Eastvold Classic Media Cabinet

Do you remember Kris’s post on Eastvold Custom Cabinets? They do furniture as well, and, as you can see above, it’s worth a look or two. This media cabinet has wire passages through all the shelves and partitions (and back/bottom), allowing for cable organization (very important). Plus, it’s made from solid walnut, so it’ll look a whole lot better than any assemble-it-yourself media stand.

60″ wide x 20″ tall x 20″ deep.

One Storage by Piero Lissoni for Kartell

Here’s another module storage system, this time by Piero Lissoni for Kartell. It’s made from a sturdy steel frame and acrylic resin doors, walls and floors, and will stand the test of time next to a cheaper version not made with the same materials.

I think something like this would look amazing in the kitchen.

Each unit is available with or without doors, and the base unit is available with either feet or wheels. The number of possible combinations is endless!

Hudson Media Cabinet

What a lovely media storage cabinet. It’s solid walnut (or cherry, if you prefer) with a stainless steel base. The shelves are large enough to accommodate the giant cable boxes that Time Warner seem to keep giving us, as well as all your dvd players, Roku’s, cable modems, etc. It’s pretty pricey, but it is one of those pieces that you will certainly have forever and ever.

Loadbearing MShelving

Customizable storage systems aren’t really a new thing, but Loadbearing’s MShelving does have a certain appeal with its industrial frame with pick-your-own door color options. With somewhat reasonable price points, it could fit your storage needs quite well.

MShelving… allows you to create your own look from a wide range of interchangeable colored steel and wood veneer sliding doors and half- and full- height drawers. MShelving was designed by Mathias Frei of Zurich, and is produced in Switzerland and Italy. It combines a sturdy, fairly industrial-feeling steel shelving system base with a refined, simple and attractive sliding door system… The shelving unit itself is made of galvanized steel. The wood finish doors are wood veneers (all from sustainable forests) on a particle board base with a galvanized steel handle edge, and the color and metallic finish doors are made of powder-coated steel.

Fulton Desk, Bookcase, Media Console

This is bare bones minimal with a tiny bit of rustic wood to warm it up. I’d say the prices are reasonable, or at least they don’t hurt the eyes.

Fulton’s minimal lines and mixed materials make a streamlined, rustic-modern statement. The warmth of the richly-figured, reclaimed teak veneer top contrasts beautifully with the industrial black metal frame, finished in three steps for an oxidized effect.

Naked Line Large Cabinet

MIO’s Jaime Salm and Stephen Cooke utilize particleboard in this smart storage cabinet.

Much of today’s contemporary furniture incorporates hollow-core materials covered by various veneers. In direct contrast to these pieces is Naked Line, a cabinet that proudly reveals the sustainable materials we have come to hide. Taking advantage of the color, texture and cost efficiency of formaldehyde-free particleboard, this cabinet represents a naked and honest approach to affordable furniture. Made from 100 percent pre-consumer waste wood, this piece has sturdy sliding doors and back panels made from powder-coated steel.

Pawnee Media Console

Modern media consoles usually seem to be super shiny and pretty expensive. Not that there’s anything wrong with super shiny, but I do like how this ‘rough hewn’ piece gives a casual warmth and contrast to any gadgets displayed on top…and it’s under the $1G mark (even if just barely).

Low flung walnut media console with rough hewn doors that add a contrasting texture to the satin finished frame. Sitting on scaled down beam legs, the Pawnee also features Corian inserts around the finger pulls.

This media center balances modern styling with a reasonable price tag (happily).

Shift Media Console/Bookcase

This affordable console/bookcase can shift roles easily as your needs change.

Versatile storage design shifts positions, shifts functions, shifts perspective from upright bookcase to horizontal media console. It shifts from positive to negative space too, with a finished, closed back square and open rectangle on each of three fixed shelves (which also means it can be used as a room divider). Align vertical multiples dramatically down the wall, or you can even stack two or three on their sides. Engineered wood is finished in a new rich teak melamine. Also in black melamine.
