RELAX Quilted Picnic Blanket

Of course, the weather is not anywhere nice enough to have a picnic outside, but there’s only a few of these ‘RELAX’ blankets around, and you’d be upset if you missed out just because it’s January. Seeing as the blanket is quilted and looks rather robust, it would do well as a sit-and-dine surface*. Plus, we all need reminding to stop and smell the roses, no matter what our surroundings may be.

Aicf 20th Anniversary- Martinez Blanket

You can help fund scholarships for the American Indian College Fund by buying this blanket. As if we needed extra reasons. Some of the other blankets are pretty eye-catching as well, and have me wondering where I might fit one into my home.

Legendary Southwest ceramic artist Maria Martinez 1887-1980) is renowned for her black-on-black pottery, re-creating an ancient art form until then seen only in museums. In the Tewa pueblo of San Ildefonso, New Mexico, she was known for making the thinnest pots in the fastest amount of time. She shared her traditional techniques and skills with her family, her Pueblo and the world, in keeping with her belief that an individual could not succeed without supporting the group.

Haptic Lab Quilts, Soft-Maps

I might be late on the bandwagon to see Emily Fischer’s Soft-Maps, but it’s better late than never. Her to-scale maps quilted onto blankets are pretty wonderful. Custom orders are available and word on the street is that the quilts make excellent gifts for big life events (weddings, etc.). Readymade has an HDYGTFAJ interview with her, I recommend it.

Klippan Billgren Wool Blanket

Oh my, are you not completely smitten with these blankets? I sure am; the only difficulty is choosing between them.

Over the years, Klippan’s designers have created new patterns that have been well appreciated and this year is no exception. This year Klippan asked Ernst Billgren to design an anniversay blanket to celebrate Klippan’s 15th year since they launched their first wool blanket using almost fogotten production techniques. Ernst Billgren is regarded as one of Sweden’s most treasured artists. He is also a member o fthe Swedish Art Academy since 1997. Unique in his diversity, his designs often reflect nature, mythology and national romanticism. The Billgren blanket an incredible work of art in itself, is available in Brown/Beige and Black/Grey 100% Wool .

Muse collection by Mae Engelgeer

I’m completely smitten with Mae Engelgeer’s Muse Collection, especially the white and black bow pillow (not shown) and throw (bottom left). If they didn’t cost slightly more than I am willing to pay, they’d both be shipping to my house right this very second.

The collection consist out of throws and cushions in different sizes. This series is a celebratory ode to her muse, the decorative symbol the bow.The fabrics are all double sides and made out of mohair, thick acrylic and lurex yarns. The fabrics she created are manufactured in the Textile Museum in Tilburg. The colours al mingles into a happy and colourful but still very stylish mix, and the plaids look like precious jewels in object of arts.

Virtue Blanket

As some of you might be aware, wedding season is fast approaching. If you’re looking for a gift for upcoming nuptials, you should (of course) get them something off their registry. However, if the couple has thumbed their noses at the tradition of registering (or if you’re a stickler for putting thought and effort into every gift), then maybe something like this would be a perfect thing to wish them well.

“The Virtue blanket (155 cm x 210 cm) is finely knitted using high quality, undyed Icelandic wool. It warms us, at the same time reminding us to be virtuous. The pattern is derived from the decorations on the virtue cloths reworked in a contemporary style, but with the historical background of the virtue cloths in mind. It is a symmetrical, abstract form that each individual can interpret in his or her own way.”

Pantheon Throw by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel

This throw isn’t a new thing, but I do keep admiring the design whenever I come across it. If you look closely, you can see images of tanks and grenades amidst the animals.

“The ordinary throw blanket may be a bit taboo in the design industry, seeing as its main function is to cover an old and unseemly couch… but when Marcel Wanders, Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel get ahold of it, it’s another story altogether! Decorated with bold, graphic patterns, the July and Pantheon Throws are elegant and unexpected heirlooms, capable of transforming any room with their warm and inviting atmosphere. If you don’t have an old couch that needs to be saved, they look equally great draped over the bed, hung on a wall, or used as a tablecloth for those extra special occasions.”

“Be the Change” Throw

I’ve often thought about making a blanket out of t-shirts–but I haven’t yet because I didn’t know it could turn out this cool.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world,” and this lovingly handmade throw brings Mahatma Gandhi’s words home in a warm and inspiring way. From the carefully selected materials, to the boldly embroidered lettering, it’s a beautifully personal embodiment of a universally important idea.”
