Table Linens

Four Diner Placemats

Should you find yourself at the table without meaningful conversation, please don’t pick up your smart phone. Instead, discreetly fill in some knowledge gaps with these placemats. Available in a set of 4, the placemats are 100% cotton (machine washable) and feature a Cocktail Guide, Map of the US, Presidents and the Chinese Zodiac.

Fold Unfold Tablecloth

This might look like it’s been carefully dip-dyed, but it’s actually digitally printed, which explains the vibrant colors and perfect pattern. In fact, I’d say just try to do this at home, and if you replicate it successfully, I’ll send you a handmade ‘well done’ ribbon. Designed by Copenhagen-based textile and color designer Margrethe Odgaard, and created for Hay Denmark.

MYdrap Cotton Place Mats

Tear away placemats and napkins sound pretty perfect for an outdoor lunch or dinner, and, as is the case with this collection by MYdrap, they’re re-usable and fully washable 100% cotton fabric. Come to think of it, these would be handy for lots of occasions, not just for outdoor meals.

Food & Fold Placemat Set

Normally I wouldn’t advocate using paper placemats, but these become animals, and that changes the whole ballgame. These are obviously geared towards kids and I’m sure they’re perfect for encouraging little ones to clean up after dinner, but I think it would be fun to have these at a low-key dinner party with friends, as each guest would be able to fold up their placemat and have an animal to take home. Sure, it’s a bit silly, but sometimes a little silliness is nice to have in our seriously adult world.

Lowercase Alphabetti Papermats

Cute. These paper place mats offer space to write out a menu, message, or customize a place setting in LCD style text. Quite similar to the DIY Screenprinted LCD card, isn’t it?

Big Top Tablecloth

Normally soft, subdued colors draw my eye, and I would guess most of us play it pretty safe when it comes to color in our homes. Maybe it’s the perpetual grey weather of January that has me itching for crazy-in-your-face color… you know, the kind that makes your eyes water and brings delight and sometimes even a ‘for goodness sakes!’ response. Now, this tablecloth might not tick all those boxes, but it is ‘fun’, with its big top imagery, even if it is a little bit juvenile. It’s appealing with its bright red and white and tassels (tassels, for goodness sakes!). Just the thing for this time of year.

Handmade of cotton in India.

Cheat Sheet Placemat

If you need some reminding about where the dessert spoon goes, here’s the perfect placemat for your table. Or, perhaps just get a few purely because you’ll enjoy the graphics. No one nowadays really cares all that much about correct placement of cutlery, do they?

“My Computer” Place mat

When looking through a recent issue of Dwell, the “Main Chaude” Oven glove caught my eye. Lo and behold, through another search, I found the retailer again and got sucked into browsing through their whole site. They have quite a bit of little textile jewels for the kitchen and dining zones. Two of my favorites are this glove and placemat:

“Untitled one” Oven glove, 15.99 ($22)
“My Computer” Place mat, set of 2, 15.99 ($22)

There’s been a previous post about Stig Lindberg Pillows, but table linens are another lovely way to inject some Scandinavian design into your home.

This colorful collection includes some of the most popular Swedish fabric designs of the 1950’s. This runner by Design House Stockholm is in the fantastic graphic prints “Lustgården” or “Pottery” by Stig Lindberg.

Luisa Cevese Riedzioni Placemats

Luisa Cevese creates one of a kind placemats using textile scraps and recycled industrial waste. That’s the good news. The bad news is you have to order 6, at $65 each (which is close to $400 for those of you who are a bit slower with multiplication/math).

Minimum order of 6 placemats.

Numbered Edition Linens

I’ve posted Heather Lins’ work before (Eye Chart Pillow), but I had no idea about the linens available.

Heather Lins’ inspiration comes from examining the ordinary. Her collections are based on vintage typography, eye charts, and conversation bubbles–images that are instantly identifiable but unexpected when found loafing on the sofa or adorning the dining room table. Each design is a balance of artisan production techniques, modern design, and wit.
