Now that it’s most certainly autumn, it’s time to think about ways to still enjoy your outside space despite the chill in the air. This fire ring will hopefully facilitate many s’mores and stories, and as it’s made from 3/16 thick steel with a solid raised internal floor to contain the ashes, it’ll do the job of keeping your fire right where you want it. The recycled poly top keeps out the elements while also doubling as an off duty cocktail table. At three feet wide, it’s just large enough for a small gathering… grab your graham crackers and marshmallows.

Have you heard of the Kammok? It’s a light weight camping hammock made from a nylon fabric called LunarWaveâ„¢. Perhaps some of our derrières might not quite fit on this tree swing, yet it’s worth reminding that it doesn’t take much to make something similar. Should you not wish to toil away making a wooden disk, this reclaimed elm seat is kiln-dried and finished with mineral oil.

No need to go out and buy a huge plastic cooler for your next outdoor fete, just snap up a couple of these recycled cardboard coolers. It has the same thermal performance as a plastic cooler and can be recycled at the end of its use. How quickly time flies. I posted this back in 2007, and, as is usually the case, the price has changed since then. While the Shadylace certainly isn’t new to the scene, I still think it’s a lovely choice for an outdoor umbrella. Light filters through the waterproof leaf motif, making you feel as though you’re sitting underneath a tree. Such a great alternative to all those semi-boring umbrellas out there.

Talk about a truly portable little grill, this one designed by Klaus Aalto measures 7.1″ x 7.1″ with a height 8.7″. I don’t know about you, but that might just be the smallest (decent) grill I’ve ever seen. If you’re planning on lots of picnicking in the park this summer, it might be worth the money.

Seeing as the plans are free and available for download, you might want to check it out and see if it’s suitable for your own outdoor area. (Also, in case you’re curious, Nina made the kitchen for the outside deck of her family’s small Beach Chalet, that we did a quick post on back in ’08.)

We featured this fire bowl way back in ’08, but now that it has a Stainless Grill top option, it’s pretty much the perfect thing for these early fall evening dinners… or S’mores, of course.

Yeah, it’s a wheelbarrow. Borrrring, you say. Not so. In fact, the redesigning of commonplace things is really where the excitement begins. We all get used to how things look and function, and sometimes we forget that simple improvements can make a huuuge difference. Case in point, this wheelbarrow.

The metal container is replaced by durable, vinyl-coated canvas. This means you load it from the ground, no repetitive lifting. Just sweep/push/roll whatever you’re moving onto the canvas. If you’ve ever raked leaves or done other yardwork, you’ll know this would make one heck of a difference. The cart’s center of gravity is low, so you lift a smaller portion of weight too. Also, it’s collapsible for easy storage and transport. All this improves the quality of life for those of us moving/gardening/cleaning/etc., which is the whole point of design, isn’t it?

The canvas supports up to 150 lbs.

These “Throw and Grow” flower grenades take guerilla gardening to the next level. Just be careful not to hit anyone; these babies would hurt.
