Table Lighting

Modo Table Lamp

While this table lamp is a tiny bit high for my wallet, I do like the industrial feel. Designed by Jason Miller for Roll and Hill (you can also purchase the lamp here, fyi), the lamp was inspired by industrial parts found on Canal Street near Brooklyn. The Modo Chandeliers are also pretty impressive.

Miyake Table Lamp

To change position of this lamp, you simply place the base on one of its 24 faces. I’d have to see this in person to really know how easy it would be to maneuver, but I do like the simplicity of base-stem-light with no extra joints or pivots. Also, is there something a little golf-like about the faceted white base and club-ish head?

Big Bounce Lamp

Those of you with experience in filming might recognize the ‘bounce’ reflection/diffusion lighting technique that is utilized in this lamp by Jonah Takagi. (I’d also guess most of you without filming experience will be able to ascertain why it’s called ‘bounce’.) I particularly like the blue and yellow cord color choices. FSC Certified Oak and powdercoated steel.

Bender Table Lamp

Just so you have fair warning, this lamp won’t ship until August. It might be worth the wait, though, considering its modern bent design (powder coated steel) and lower price point. I can’t decide whether the white with the red cord wins out over the all black option; I suppose it depends on where you plan on placing it.

Available in black with a black cord or white with a red cord.

Capello Lamp

Let’s just get this straight: this lamp is $160. Compared to the Love Letter Light (also by molo), which ran around the $400 mark, that’s a bargain. Now, consider its marble base, which is actually a byproduct from the base for the Arco floor lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers. Next, the little paper cap (“cappello” in Italian) is attached to the steel wire with a simple magnetic connection, which allows you to slide and tilt it into any position. Do you remember that it costs $160? Such a nice price for a lovely little lamp. And, if you like, you can remove the steel wire and paper cap to move the light to other places, say, a wine bottle or a small hole drilled into a wood surface. More shots below.

Porcelain Lantern Lamp

If you’re craving the glow of a camp lantern, here’s just the thing. If you keep the wattage low, it might make a great nightlight in a hallway or kid’s room (or your own, if you need a little reassurance in the dark).

Top Four Light from Luxit

This little Lego-ish light features four LEDs that “achieve top performance”, but what I like most is that the head flips back and forth to provide either localized bedside lighting or an overall accent light.

Available in several vibrant colors.

Tua Table Lamp

I have to say, I’m really liking this lamp. It helps that Marco Zito, the designer, explains his thinking behind the design (see below), and thereby performs an excellent sales pitch. Simple and elegant, it’s surprising that the price point can be found as low as $211, though most retailers have it around the $300 mark.

STACKS: LAMPS

Smart! Stack them in a tower or stick ‘em in a bookcase, these birch plywood lamps are minimal and very functional. Total edition size is 20, so if you don’t snap a few up soon, you might have to get your toolbox out for a DIY version.

Noguchi Akari Lights

The Noguchi Akari Lights are this week’s design classic pick. It’s not surprising that paper lights abound in today’s marketplace (the cheapest of which you’ll find at IKEA: VÄTE Table lamp etc.), yet there’s still something entirely special about the original designs of Isamu Noguchi. Icons of mid century design, each Akari lamp is handmade from washi paper and bamboo ribbing by the original manufacturer in Gifu, Japan. In the words of Noguchi, “the harshness of electricity is thus transformed, as if by magic, into the light of our origins – sunlight – so that it’s warmth can carry on filling our rooms after dark.”

Also, while looking around for images, I ran across this video (below) showing a craftsperson constructing a lamp, which is slightly hypnotic.

Placa Lamps

The Placa Lamp is a charming little light that rests on a simple board. This plinth-like base sets off the lamp and switch elements, making a sort of stage to set items upon. The double and triple versions have additional lamp shades, which add to the stage feel (almost like actors conspiring). Kiosk Table Lamp

Update: The Kiosk Table lamp is on sale for $190 now at DWR, which is a heck of a lot more affordable than the regular price of $380.

This oval shaped lamp would look lovely in any room. It’s substantial as far as size and materials, yet the shape lends itself to working well on sideboards or nightstands. Inspired by classic mid-century Danish lighting.
