Cloud Rugs by Haptic Lab

Haptic Lab has Cloud Rugs, what more do you need to know? They’re flat-woven, 100% wool rugs, with a subtle fade from an intense red to a light peach hue or from a deep violet to a light blue. The organic cloud shapes form a striking pattern that will hopefully bring to mind peaceful skies or bold inspiration, whichever you prefer.

El Prado Rug from grain

Is anyone else in the mood for some crazy rugs? Maybe it’s the summer heat, but there’s something about this optical grid patterned rug from grain that looks just right. No need to worry about where it came from either, as each rug is handwoven by “artisan weavers in the Western Highlands of Guatemala using locally sourced and dyed wool.” Does that make you like it a little more? Their Momostenango Rug also hits the spot.

Oslo, Fanfare, Code, Azi, Division Rugs

Code words? Nah, just a bunch of rugs. A certain retailer just released a slew of new products, and I’ve got to say, they’re killing it in the rug department. All of the rugs are affordable, so don’t expect silk or anything made with unicorn hair, but just take a look and tell me you don’t think they’re a decent bunch of patterned rugs. I dare you. (If you should take my dare, I’ll tell you to find another retailer with a better selection in the same price range, and then we’ll argue about which one of us has better taste, so, be prepared.)

Geometric Rug by Alyson Fox

A little geometry mixed in with natural looped jute and tufted wool and cotton all combine to make this pleasing patterned rug by Alyson Fox. Jute plus wool and cotton? Yep, don’t be alarmed, you’ll have a couple of extra textures beneath your feet, and rest assured all three are natural products. Plus, doesn’t yellow sort of shout “Summer!” to you?

Painted Plains Rug Collection by AVO

If you’re a vegan or you’re opposed to leather in any way, shape or form, just admire the graphic patterns on these ‘rugs’ and skip on over to the next post. Okay, for the rest of us, let’s soak in the fact that these patterns are hand painted on leather hides. Hand painted. DIY-ers will have their thinking gears crunching, and everyone else will have to start saving their Benjamins, for the Painted Plains Collection by Avo does not come cheap. Hang one on the wall to admire or put one on the floor to (gingerly) walk on, either way your room won’t ever be described as boring.

Aelfie x Studio Proba Rugs

A pretty patterned rug that rolls right in with the spring season is just what our floors need. These Aelfie x Studio Proba Rugs play with colorful, geometric shapes in a flat woven 100% wool. All five designs are easy on the eyes, but these three are my favorites (and seem to be available through the Cooper Hewitt Shop’s website). Fair warning, though, there’s a limited edition of only 3 each.

Ferm Living Circular Jute Rug

I don’t know where you’re going to put one of these circular jute rugs by Ferm Living, but you’d better figure it out, because for $62, they’re a steal of a deal. And don’t ask why, because the patterns- triangles! dots! sticks!- should pretty much convince you, if not the size (it’ll fit anywhere) and the fact that’s it’s made from 100% jute. I’d say it could work well in your entryway, laundry room, or any other high traffic space (a kid’s room, perhaps?).

Kinder GROUND

How about a bright, modular floor system that has no F’s, L’s, O’s, or R’s in its name? Well, I take back the O and R, as the name Kinder GROUND has those. No floor adhesive necessary, the Kinder GROUND system has various geometric shapes that fit together to create nontraditional rug sizes. Each hex, triangle, or diamond tile is fairly colorful, and you can either create your own pattern or purchase a pre-packaged configuration.

Fleche Rug

If you choose any of the Fleche rugs for your home, you are allowed to be socially boring*. The rugs are Samare Studio’s update to the Pays d’en Haut Legacy collection, and utilize traditional felting techniques to create the imagery of flames and bolts of lightning (as evoked by the Quebec native ‘flรฉchรฉe’ motif). Four different palettes are available.

Bicicleta Rug

Rugs that can live indoors or outside are what you should be thinking about, because what’s nicer than an outdoor seating area? An outdoor seating area with a rug, that’s what. Now, there are loads of outdoor area rugs that are available, and this one from Nani Marquina isn’t new, but it is still one of my favorites because it’s made from- you guessed it- recycled rubber bicycle tires. Each rug is made using 130 to 140 bicycle inner tubes, all collected and processed in India. Instead of ending up in a landfill, the hand-loomed inner tubes adds an interesting texture as well as a soft surface for your feet. It’s a win/win kind of product.

Hay & Scholten & Baijings’ Paper Carpet

Paper carpets? Indeed. Made of woven paper thread with a non-slip rubber backing, these carpets designed by Scholten & Baijings feature various soft and strong color pairings that would brighten up any entryway or hallway. Oh, and they’re water and stain repellent, so you won’t have to worry about dirty shoes or rain boots.

Homage to the Square

If you’re a fan of Josef Albers, you’ll want to consider this rug, Homage to the Square. It’s adapted from his 1951 oil painting and, surprisingly, not terribly expensive. Don’t worry, it’s produced in association with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. If the price tag is still much higher than you want to spend, take a look at a less expensive, similar style rug at the end.

Miac Whirlwind Jute Rug

A round, whirlwind of a rug is just what your [insert a room in your home] needs. Santa Fe’s Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) partnered up with West Elm to revive a few patterns inspired by designs from an early 20th century Native basket, and there’s a couple of interesting options in the area rug arena. At six feet in diameter, this spinning triangle pattern will do a good job of putting a little pizzazz into an otherwise boring, ho-hum room.

Grey Dot with Orange Rug

If you need a soft surface on that ‘fifth wall’ of your living area or bedroom, do consider a this grey dot rug with subtle orange lines. It’s a quiet color scheme with that little hint of color, which means it’d be easy to work some designer magic by adding a few orange accents- maybe a pillow, maybe a lamp, it’s up to you. After you’ve added a couple of color accents, your room will look more pulled together and, dare we hope, semi-pro.

Losanges Rug

Pair Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec with the Nani Marquina rug team and what’s the result? Awesomeness, of course.

The Losanges is a reinterpretation of the traditional Persian rug using the kilim technique. Kilim rugs are pretty flat, as you might know, because the strands are tightly interwoven and there’s no pile (cushiness). In this kilim rug, 13 colors are combined through a geometrical rhombus shape, all handwoven by Northern Pakistan craftsmen. Now, maybe if you’re very talented, you can confidently say that you could weave something as impressive as this with your hands, but I sure as you-know-what can’t, so I understand the higher price point. Technically complex, indeed.
