Look at this beauty. It’s not new, but it is something worth revisiting for its shiny, spectacular surface. Each light is made from solid metal sheets that are pressed, spun and brazed to form the double walled shade. Referencing the Olympic medals, the Void Light is available in three metallic finishes: brass, polished stainless steel and copper. The halogen light provides a ‘soft directional beam’.

A simple grouping of hanging pendants is made all the more interesting when you mix up the cord colors and bulbs. After all, it’s fun to go a little crazy in lighting options, especially if you pick a few of your favorite hues. The NUD classic pendant has a load of color options, even more so if you order directly from the NUD Collection Webshop, and you could even go super crazy and pick out different socket colors, though I’d advise against it as it could look a lot less planned and a little more insane.

Another folded paper lamp, yawn… but wait, it’s not paper, it’s ceramic! Which means it’ll break if you drop it, so don’t. The patterned surface will lend just enough texture to a room and you’ll get the nice, even glow you’d expect from a ceramic shade. And, the size is just right for a small breakfast nook, or maybe even beside the bed suspended above the nightstand.

The smaller version of this chandelier has always stood out for its elegance and affordability, but man-oh-man, the extra large version is even better. It’s almost 5 feet across! This is a prime example of getting one heck of a bang for a few bucks.

Now, don’t get too excited as this is just a shade, and not a complete pendant light, and it’s intended for interiors with electrical conduit. However, if you’ve got an interior (say, a retail or café-type environment) with exposed electrical conduit, then you’re now allowed to jump up and down as you’ve an affordable solution to your lighting problems. This 8″ fixture simply slides over the conduit and rests neatly on a ceramic lampholder (see Noah’s website for details).

A bit of brass won’t hurt you if you put it in the right place, namely, above your head in the shape of a light fixture. Bestlite lamps have a history; did you know that Robert Dudley Best’s lamp was the first example of Bauhaus in the UK, and required quite a bit of argument to put it into production? Interesting, as the collection now looks rather traditional, in a pared-down, elegant sort of way. The BL9M pendant is also available in Grey/Brass and Charcoal Black/Brass.

What might be made from wooden pallets? Lamp shades, of course! There’s a little assembly required, but that means less shipping costs from the UK, so can those complaints and count your cash. No gluing, screwing, or hammering needed, just click each piece in place. Each shade is slightly different as wooden pallets vary, but you can pick the color of elastic to unify a set or grouping.

Flat-panel LED technology makes quite the difference, as seen in the specs of this Cielo Pendant Light. It lasts for 50 thousand hours or 25 years of daily use. Pretty different from those regular bulbs we all had (and may still have) in our homes. LED technology has allowed this efficiency, and in the case of this lamp, it used only 8 watts of power. Contrast that with a regular 60 watt bulb and you’ll understand the savings. As an extra bonus, the Cielo is glare free, warm (color temperature: 3000K), and dimmable.

The Pablo Tube Top lamps have been around for years- before 2007 at least – but this pendant takes the stretcher idea to new heights (so to speak). While the 36″ wide version, shown above, is perfectly proportioned for a rectangular dining area, the smaller 7″ or 14″ could work quite well above a bar or as a pendant above a bedside table.

Bend has truly excellent seating options in a few lucky shades of pop-out color, so it should be no surprise that they add this extra special spherical pendant to their collection. Mainly this lamp has resided in the in-case-I-inherit-money inspiration folder, but if you possess great skills in money management, maybe one day you’ll have one for your very own. Designed by Jean Prouvé in collaboration with Charlotte Perriand in 1950, the Potence lamp provides overhead lighting on a pivoting swivel. The single metal rod extends almost 7 feet from the wall, which allows illumination in a 180-degree range without the fuss of taking up floor space.

Lower budgets have the Phrena Lights by Tord Boontje. Mid to higher priced budgets might consider the Folded Light Art of designer Jiangmei Wu. Each light is made from 100 percent recycled cotton paper and is made by using original origami folding techniques that Wu developed. And yes, each shade can be unfolded into flat pieces of paper, though it would be silly to try unless you’re an origami expert.
