Dinnerware

Blue Mormor Dinnerware by Normann Copenhagen

Using textiles as inspiration, this collection of dinnerware by Gry Fager was influenced by “the atmosphere and the character of the kitchen, particularly older kitchens from [her] grandmother’s time.”(-normann-copenhagen)

“The Mormor series is made for the modern kitchen and dining table using ceramics as its point of departure, and it definitely applies to the traditional kitchen. Not only that, structures and patterns along with familiar kitchen items such as cloths and dishcloths are contained in the visual expression of this series.”

Irezumi Ink Dish Tattoo Design

Whether you’re a fan of tattoos or not, this ink-inspired dinnerware is lovely interpretation of traditional porcelain table settings. I’d like to think that this would satisfy the ‘matchy-matchy’ crowd (i.e. people who like to have everything match) but still give a little bit of edgy/alternative style to the table.

Paul Timman is one of the leading tattoo artists in the world and recognized as a specialist in tribal and traditional Japanese designs. Here he inks is world renowned designs on porcelain inspired by classical Japanese tattoos.

Lily Pond Sushi Set

This sushi set certainly evokes a lily pond; I like how the forms are handled simply and how they manage to be fun in an understated, elegant way.

It is important to remember that the objects presented here, just like the ones in the Chin Family, characters or flowers and fruits, each performing the roles of domestic household objects, are made partly in hand-decorated plastic and partly in fine bone china, also hand-decorated. The magic of Giovannoni’s design lies in the fact that these objects recall the grace of 18th century ceramic trinkets, while at the same time being utterly contemporary…

Sushi set composed of: plate and chopsticks in melamine, small plate for soy sauce and chopsticks holder in fine bone china. Hand-decorated.

Chinese Whisper

It’s strange how such a simple ‘tweak’ can update an old pattern into something that complements the modern table setting.

A lovely combination of east and west, the Chinese Whisper features standard willow patterns on standard ceramic plates, cups and saucers. Alone, this would seem rather common, but with a simple tweak in manufacturing, the patterns are mismatched, adding a clean, contemporary edge to a classic design.

Small plate: 7.75″ dia.
Large plate: 10.5″ dia.
Cup: 3″ dia. x 2.75″H
Saucer: 5.75″ dia.

Mug 09 & Salad Plate 20 by Sarah Cihat

Two particularly fine examples of Sarah Cihat’s Rehabilitated Dishware:

Artist Sarah Cihat takes once mundane thrift store dishes and reglazes/fires them after reviving their surfaces with vibrant colors and iconic silhouettes. By giving these discarded items a new look and a new life, Cihat is making a subtle statement on the importance of recycling and rePurposing products.
