Walnut Punched Placemat

What a nice placemat! And it’s different and modern and made from formica veneer on wood. I like it. But, there’s something unfortunate- it’s apparently discontinued and therefore the quantity is limited. Shoot, huh? Anybody know of another place that carries it?

Insect Fruit Plates

I absolutely love these plates and I know that they are way too expensive (at least for the average person). But they’re so completely lovely; the hand painted insects were taken from a famous Cumberland pattern designed by Joseph Zachenberger from 1760-1765 (I’m such a sucker for historical replicas).

Stamp Mugs

I love the idea of taking an inherent flaw of something and turning it into an advantage. This concept takes the familiar coffee ring and elevates it to something unexpected yet welcome. I saw these on this great design site a long time ago but, as far as I know, they weren’t available for purchase. Finally, it’s been picked up by a retailer in the US.

Jonathan Adler teapot

From one of Jonathan Adler’s earlier lines, the ‘Nelson’ line of pottery is based on the bubble lamps made by George Nelson. I really like how Adler can make ceramic look like it’s draped over a wire frame. It’s elegant.

Float Tea Lantern and Tea Cups

I think maybe I posted this collection a while back (and if I didn’t, it’s gotten plenty of well-deserved attention from other sites) but now I’m bringing it to your attention again since I recently ran across a retailer. Each teapot is individually handmade in the Czech Republic from fine borosilicate glass (which is superior for its high temperature resistance) and, because of the design, you are able to pour it by hand just like any ol’ bottle. I guess I don’t have to mention that it’s absolutely the most beautiful teapot/lantern that I’ve ever seen- quite different from your average tea set to say the least.

“Designed by architects Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Float Tea Lantern recently won acclaim at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City and awards from both UNESCO and London’s The Architectural Review.”

Condiment Set

Before I went to Japan I had big plans of taking home useful items that have been designed well and that are unavailable in the US. That’s essentially what shopping in another country is about: taking home something that you can’t find anywhere else. Well, when I got to Japan it seemed like everything fit that description. It’s like going to the pound and wanting to take home every animal and you realize it just won’t be possible.

Anyway, I saw this in Tokyo, and due to sensory overload I didn’t take this, or any of it’s brothers and sisters home with me.

Regret is expensive.
