Kotori Sake Serving Set

This set has such nice form; the handle of the pitcher lends a subtle modern feel. It would be an excellent housewarming/wedding gift…

“Like its namesake ‘kotori’ย is Japanese for ‘small bird’ this sprightly porcelain sake pitcher stands watch over five small cups. The set, designed by Finland’s Tomi Pelkonen, rests on a thick oak serving tray. SFMOMA exclusive.”

Jorine Oosterhoff Mad Hatter Bowls

While you might not have the disposable income to afford these pieces, you might know someone that does, and that someone might be less grumpy during teatime if they owned one or two of these to hold their snacks.

“With experimental forms and avant-garde design, these progressive and playful pieces are sure to inspire an afternoon of tea and delectable goodies. As the designer herself describes, ‘My products become characters, like individual things that seem to live their own life. They have their own identity and personality. Sometimes they seem to come from a fairytale-world. Products making us feel like being in a different world.'”

Cut + Serve Tray

This actually solves a problem that I have with my whole grape + brie + cracker scenario. First, it addresses that knife scraping on the plate sound when I cut the brie with the built in cutting board. Second, if offers a place to hide the knife whilst I’m not cutting. Thirdly, the separation of grape and crackers is a nice option too, it prevents the crackers from getting soggy.

Fokus Collection by Maija Louekari

With just enough pattern to add some interest to the contrast, this collection is really eye-catching when mixed and matched with the Marrimekko mugs shown in the photograph.

“Maija Louekari dots your eyes with this lighthearted collection for your kitchen. Decorated in either red and white or black and white spotted patterns, she has coordinated both large and small trays, oven mitts, placemats, potholders, mugs, and aprons with her highly popular design.”

Black Lace Cake Stand

How many cake stands could qualify as modern? This is not a rhetorical question, by the way, I really only know of this one.

“A contemporary interpretation of the traditional cake stand, this versatile glass piece has an intricate reverse lace pattern in black. Perfect for serving cakes and other confections, or as a display piece where the light filters through the pattern to create shadows on the surface below. Hand-wash only.”

Vintage Dahlia Serving Pieces

Certain vintage patterns are reproduced, thankfully, due to their compatibility with modern aesthetic. This particular set is done in black and white, which usually lends itself to a more modern austere look, yet with a traditional flower design it seems to bridge the gap between past and present quite well.

Okay, so it’s not “hex” but it’s pentagonal and triangular and I think those are quite possibly the next best thing. In fact, they may just be the next new thing.
