Persian Explosion Rug (a.k.a Modello Rug)

Huh? I saw this on Core77 and put an email in to Studio Mango to see when it might be available to buy online, and surprise, surprise, it already is. However, take a look at the price (and retailer). What does this affordability mean? Is the quality maybe not so great? Someone please shed light on this strange occurrence. I get that the material is not wool, so sure, that affects the cost, but I’m not used to a 5’x8′ being under $300. I’m confused and concerned. I’ve been assured that the crazy affordable price is due to the retailer buying up a large amount of the rugs, thereby passing on the savings to all of us lucky ducks. Forgive my original skepticism.

The Persian carpet is a product which has been around for centuries if not a millennium, a product with great tradition and heritage. Never the less its appeal has been decreasing, many young people consider it to be an object for grannyยดs house. So Studio Mango decided to grab the rug and update it to be ready for the year 2010 without losing touch of its original origin and heritage. A collection of 6 different models and sizes has been taken into production by Umbra.

Designed by Studio Mango for Umbra
75% polypropelene/11% Jute/8% polyester/6% polyester-cotton blend.

Metro 13′ Runner by Gandia Blasco

If you had this in a hallway, wouldn’t you be tempted to see how far you could jump? Or would you just wear out your kids (or guests) by suggesting it? Note: a non-slip rug pad would be needed to make sure no accidents occurred.

The Magnas Rectangular MR2 Rug by Gandia Blasco

Either of these two rugs certainly have enough character to carry a room. The texture, color and pattern all combine into a quirky rug that (in my opinion) further proves Patricia Urquiola’s ability to stretch creativity within the home. These two rugs sort of remind me of woolen scarves, but in the absolute best possible way.

Designer: Patricia Urquiola
Materials: Yarn composition: 100% new wool.

Anni Albers Runner Rug

It’s quite wonderful when older designs look just as relevant today as they did in their original time period. This runner (design by Anni Albers ) adds pattern and texture, making it a perfect neutral backdrop for an entryway or hall.

With the belief that aesthetics should be a consideration in every aspect of daily life, Anni Albers (born Annelise Fleischmann) joined the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop as a student in 1922. Though her initial passion lay in painting, women were restricted at that time to textiles, which she nonetheless took to enthusiastically. Experimenting with new materials for weaving, she elevated textile design to a true art form. Rug designer Christopher Farr has brought two Albers designs into production for the first time. They feature a short, dense pile, letting them fit under doors and are crafted from hand-spun wool, which is then hand-tufted in India.

Measurements: L 10′ x W 3′
Materials: 100% wool; gauze backing.

Nina Bovasso Rug from BravinLee

Where do I even begin… this rug is so crazy freaking beautiful that I’m having heart palpitations. Did I mention that I’m in the market for an area rug? And this one has me dizzy. Did I also mention I’m drawn to the most expensive things, like a moth to a very bright lovely flamethrower? This rug by artist Nina Bovasso features 36 saturated colors and is GoodWeave certified, and if I owned it I would just point and stare.

It’s no secret that Twinkle Living has some great rugs to choose from; this circular cream and black design is a great option for a seating area that needs a focal point.

With custom prints and designs inspired by imagery culled from a life spent working in the arts, traveling the world, and escaping with idle daydreams, Wenlan brings a fresh point of view to her work and is thrilled to translate her ideas into a line of unique but accessible collection for the home.

Angela Adams Couture Collection, Rain Tapestry

Yep, this does have a certain psychedelic edge to it, but the color choices are intriguing in a bright sort of way and you know it’s got to be a nice quality for that kind of price (ouch, huh?). Other pieces within the Couture Collection are quite lovely as well, and even if you can’t quite see one of the rugs fitting into your budget, it might be worth taking a look at some of them to get color inspiration.

Daydream Rug by Twinkle Living

This is the sort of rug that makes you want it no matter the price, because of the following reasons: it’s strange, no one else has it (probably), your guests would spend all sorts of time trying to decipher the imagery (which would give you more time to get the table set/drinks poured, etc.), and it’s black and blue and white, which could act as a neutral in a very tricky* (but delightful) way.

Wire Rug

I’d say these bold brush-like strokes of this black and white rug would add some energy to a room. (Energy as in movement, not like “I can tell you have good energy by your aura…”)

Graphic carbon barbed wire escapes the predictable confines in a freeform contrast on plush linen hand-tufted New Zealand/Indian wool.

Positive/Negative Rug

These two rugs are added to the ever expanding list of things that are too expensive to buy but completely cool enough to wish there were copies/knockoffs (I feel like a traitor to the design world for saying that).

Positive and Negative Rug were designed as a special collection for Kasthall by Swedish designer Björn Dahlström. Both rugs have a pattern of hand written text, which describes the “feelings” of the rug – one with a more positive outlook and the other somewhat more negative – hence the names. The rugs are hand tufted in pure linen, with a white base and navy blue text. The standard size is 170x240cm, other sizes available upon request.

Driade Sheradze Rug

Whoa, I think I love this seemingly spliced-together rug. For those of you in the UK, you’re lucky enough to take advantage of some savings. I didn’t see any available stockists in the US, but please let me know if that’s incorrect.

Designer: Marta Laudani & Marco Romanelli
Dimensions: Width: 200mm* x Depth: 3000mm
(*I think this is supposed to be ‘2000mm’ as that would make the rug about 6.5′ x 9′. I would double check before ordering though, fyi.)
