Case Study Alpine Series Bed -- $ 2,895.00| Buy it here
Efficient minimalism, indeed. Made entirely of multi-ply bent laminated wood, this bed is just about as structurally sound as you can get with this sort of craftsmanship (while keeping the design aesthetic, of course). The smooth curves do echo Alpine sports, but I’d say it’s more reminiscent of a mid century design classic than ski equipment.
The frame is the first to be built almost entirely of bentwood, giving it both fluidity and strength. The bed was inspired by alpine sports like skiing and toboganning, where strength, lightness and a strong graceful structure are crucial. As in the aesthetic of Alpine sports, the Alpine Series bed embodies efficient minimalism and craftsmanship. Ah, isn’t this a lovely bed? Isn’t it just spectacular? Every once in a while (if not often) I’ll run across something that I think ‘oh, wow, that’s a great piece, I wonder how much it is?’ and then almost have a heart attack when I see the price. If I ever spend $20,000 on a bed, just shoot me. That being said, if you’ve got the money to spend, and you choose to spend it on this, I will not shoot you, nor will I encourage others to do so. To each their own.
Dramatic and beautiful, this interpretation of the traditional four poster bed is a complete scene-stealer. The balls and frame are made from burnt and waxed ash, finished by hand, with a slatted base in beech wood. It is exclusive to The Conran Shop and can be made in custom sizes.

The American Modern Bed (2008) is based on George Nelson’s iconic design for a daybed that he created in 1948. Nelson’s work – whether designing clocks, lamps or furniture – expressed his desire to “do much more with much less.” Still true to Nelson’s straightforward design aesthetic, we’ve made updates to take advantage of today’s manufacturing techniques. This Bed has a solid maple platform and headboard, which we’ve crafted out of solid FSC-certified wood. The platform has slats to permit air circulation through the mattress, and center supports for added stability. The Bed’s canted headboard is mounted on metal brackets that provide some “give” and a short footboard (about 2″) keeps the mattress in place. Made in U.S.A.

Geez, I know $1800 for a bed still seems a little steep in price, but considering the price tag used to be $4500, it sounds like a deal.
Most conventional leather bed’s like their sofa counterpart’s suffer from overstyling and excessive padding in order to denote luxury or comfort. Taking a more restrained approach is the Loja Leather Bed (2004), distinctive in its pared-down, sleigh bed form. Skillfully produced in Spain, the bed features light padding over the entire frame to create a soft, cushioned surface that surrounds the user. Large panels of silky, oil-tanned leather the warmest and most supple of cowhide leather’s are used to upholster the frame and are neatly stitched with welted perimeter seams. The headrest features a slight pitch to accommodate comfortable reading or TV viewing.
