Inspiration can come from anywhere, and in the case of Hee Welling, it was the interior of a refrigerator. More specifically, the shelves inside the refrigerator caught the eye of this industrial designer. At the time, Welling was fiddling with an idea for creating a chair that uses only one material. Altering this criteria a small bit, Welling added only a powder coating and created his Hee Collection (2004). The durable powder coat finish makes the Hee Chair suitable for indoor and outdoor use by protecting the solid steel underneath. The coating also provides a surprisingly soft seat, and gives a slight "give" to the surface.

This tongue-in-cheek table can be used indoors or out, thanks to the polyurethane finish.

The innovative and intriguing Cloth Table is one of 20 furniture designs developed by Gerard der Kinderen in 2007 after two decades as a creative director in the communications industry. Topped with a ‘cloth’ made from a durable, flexible combination of polyether and polyurethane that is both soft to the touch and ideally suited to outdoor living, the table was selected as the Official Table for Tokyo Designers’ Week 2007.

Yep, it's that time of year again...catalogs of outdoor furniture is filling the mailbox and thoughts of BBQs on the back porch gets us spending money to make it more hospitable. You can shell out some major bucks on revamping your entire outdoor seating, or, if that's not entirely feasible, maybe just add a few lanterns in bright colors to spice it up a bit.

Here's a nice habitat for your neighborhood birds. As you know, their habitats are disappearing, and it's nice if you can provide a place for them to nest.

Made from all-natural clay, the Terracotta Bird House (2003) is an attractive, but not ostentatious, home for garden birds. Designers Gavin Christman and Kate Knapp created the Bird House as a response to the disappearing habitats of small North American birds. Its understated spherical design and small entry hole make it impervious to the advances of squirrels and other predators, and it’s sized to offer a safe nesting spot for blue tits, coal tits and marsh tits. The Bird House comes in recyclable packaging and includes a steel wire for hanging and a plastic protector to prevent tree damage.

This folding rocking chair and ottoman is something to seriously consider. It looks pretty good for something so easily transportable/compactible.

Takeshi Nii designed the Ny Rocking Chair and Ottoman in 1958, after he was inspired by an ad for a director’s chair in an archival magazine from the 1930s. Using the same basic structure - a simple folding frame wrapped with durable canvas - he designed Ny to be a lounge chair. Ny, which is pronounced nee and is the Danish word for “new,” remains an innovative concept in folding chairs 50 years after its introduction. At only 14.5 lbs, the Ny folds into a compact 5.5" form that can stand on its own discreetly in the corner, or be easily picked up and moved wherever an extra lounge chair needed. Said Nii of the design, “I wanted to produce a chair where one can just sit and relax after eating a nice meal.” The Ny Rocking Chair is included in the permanent collection at MoMA.
