I don’t know a lot about kids’ furniture, but I do know if a piece costs over the $1000 mark it better look damn good. Luckily, this bunk bed looks better than most adult beds, and will stand the test of time thanks in part to a sturdy Baltic birch plywood and FSC certified eco-MDF frame. As with most bunks, it separates into two beds (a loft bed and a standalone twin) should your little ones want a different configuration.

How nice is the recent trend of furniture being made of recycled materials, thereby making the piece recyclable when it’s at the end of its life cycle? Very nice, indeed, and it’s certainly a trend to keep. This chair by Javier Mariscal is made from recycled polypropylene with a stacking metal base or a non-stacking wooden base. While I’ve only found one UK retailer so far, I’m sure there’ll be some retailers stateside that will pick it up (fingers crossed). Produced by Mobles 114.

I just came across this fantastic looking series tables and lamps at Design Milk. The Mesh Series by Horgan Becket is a collection of tables and lamps inspired by steel wire forms commonly seen in fencing and other industrial applications. While the industrial look is certainly in these days, it takes a special touch and consideration not just go with, “add steel here, big welds over there, finish with worn reclaimed wood”, and actually design something unique without straying too far from the original aesthetic. I feel this series of furniture pieces, particularly the tables, do just that. The Mesh series is handcrafted and made to order by Horgan Becket in Brooklyn, NY. Update: Originally $495 from MoMA, this stool is now on sale for $299.95 ($269.95 for members).

While it could be said that the price is rather dear for a simple stool, the colors are delightful, and the added ‘handle’ does add a playful sort of functionality. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but the stool is actually covered in felt, which gives it that soft surface look and feel.

While these tables do seem quite small (10″Wx14″Dx14″H), they are currently on sale for $39.95 for a set of 2. Put four tables together for a coffee table, or keep them separate for smaller drink tables and such. They’d be pretty versatile for any outdoor space and you could buy several without breaking the bank.

There is more to this bench than meets the eye. Did you know it’s made primarily from recycled paper and plastic? Did you know it is a modular design based on on L-shaped units, which allow for building individual chairs, tables, and multi-seat configurations? One pack of ten makes a chair, table base or stool, while two packs will get you a bench, settee or coffee table. Three or more packs means longer bench seating (and possibly more interesting combinations). A simple system of connecting rods allows for quick assembly; one pack shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes to set up. Noted Japanese architect Shigeru Ban is the brains behind this system (there’s lots of images of his architecture on google if you want a quick look).

I know, it’s so frustrating when not all beautiful things are available to us right away and without shipping fees, but, such is the nature of our world. So, if you live in a European country or if you have loads of cash, consider this writing desk by Young & Norgate. The sleek silhouette has its drawer mechanics exposed, making a feature out of the function. Sized for your correspondence needs (laptop or pen and paper), there’s adequate surface and storage space, with an optional cable well hidden into the back. Having a desk like this would make answering emails less of a chore and more of a pleasure, I’d think.

Similar, of course, to Molo’s softseating, this FlexibleLove bench folds up to less than a foot in length while providing seating for 8 to 20 people when fully extended. Impressive, no? I’d say it’d be extremely handy for parties.

I’m really digging this new Slope Desk by British via Norway designer Thomas Jenkins.

It gestures at traditional sloped drafting tables with a downward angled surface and adds two hinged doors revealing felt-lined compartments for storage and organization. Two included wedges create a level surface for holding pens and your favorite drink. Solid maple legs support a desk surface constructed from a mix of birch veneer MDF and plywood.

Since this chair is powder coated steel, one can only assume it’s appropriate for outdoor use. While $300 is not cheap, it’s a heck of lot more affordable than, say, the iconic Bertoia Chair that requires more of an investment.

Perusing the various Windsor chairs designed by Matthew Hilton (for De La Espada), made me think that I had recently sighted a similar modern Windsor lounge somewhere else… and indeed, I had… at West Elm. Maybe it’s obvious which one’s which, but have a guess at the price difference and see if you’re right…

Not being a huge fan of all-aluminum chairs, I’m happy to see that British designer Michael Young has partnered with Emeco to bring about a hybrid with solid ash legs (harvested from fallen timber near Lancaster, PA, hence the chair’s name). The seat and back are available matte or polished, either of which gives a nice contrast to the softer wood. You also might be happy to hear that these stack up to six high, making storage optional.

Nice. These shelving units are made of 1/2″ thick formed acrylic with rubber cord to create the illusion of floating space. From a distance they look hazy, yet up close they have an interesting linear pattern.
