FURNISHINGS

Adler Table

Speaking of height-adjustable desks, if you want something that looks less like a keyboard stand and more like an antique worktop, turn your eyes towards the Adler Table. It has a hand-operated crank, made from solid steel gears and a chromed, cast iron handle. The height range is from 27in to 42in (a little less than the X-Table) and is available in a variety of sizes, types of wood, and the steel legs can be powder-coated in almost any color.

Atlas Coffee Table vs. Free Range

And here we have another face-off, and this time it’s in the realm of wood and marble coffee tables. Yes, they’re not exactly the same, but there are the similarities in materials and dimensions, so why not see if you can guess which one has the $1800 price tag and which one has the $600 tag?

Comback Chair

It feels like this chair was on the wait list forever, and now, finally, at last it’s available to purchase here in the US. Before, we linked to the UK retailer Utility, but now Hivemodern carries all three versions: 4 leg, Swivel, and Sled base. The Comback chair is Patricia Urquiola’s updated version of the classic Windsor chair, with a single mold plastic form for functionality and bright colors to make it thoroughly modern.

Pebble Coffee Table

Well, seeing as this concrete table weighs almost 100 pounds, you’ll not want to move it around much, but it’s a relief to see that it has an affordable price tag of $254. The rounded shape will soften up all those sharp edges of your other furniture, inside or out. And, chances are that this table will require less upkeep than other pieces- though don’t go tempting fate by pouring red wine or other colorful drinks over it. (Also available: Pebble Side Table, $126.)

X-Table

There’s been a lot of talk in the last year or two about the health benefits of standing while you work, but unfortunately there hasn’t been a lot of excellent options when it comes to height adjustable desks. That’s why this X-table is a welcome sight for our sore eyes and backsides. A hand-operated crank adjusts the work top from 25″ to 47.25″, so you’ll be able to change the height rather easily should you wish to switch from standing to sitting. There’s also a handy cable management space on the underside to hide messy computer cords.

Aura Media Unit

Hello, hello. With such a stream-lined look, it’s a relief that this media unit is under the $2G price point (even if only just). Let’s get to the important stuff: Super sleek look? Check. Adequate storage space? Check. Cord management/escapes? Check. Sturdiness? Craftsmanship? Could handle a freaking huge flat screen? Check, check, and check. Choose between walnut or oak wood.

Air Stools

The Air Stool was meant to be visually light and understated, and it succeeds at both points thanks to the designer’s skill, of course, and rotation-molded polyethylene, a strong and lightweight material. And yes, it’s plastic, so it can be used indoors or out. Available in four earth-toned colors and two (16″ or 30″) heights.

Mini Stacked Shelving System

Oh, nice! There’s now a smaller version of the Stacked Shelving System by JDS Architects for Muuto. The mini version can be arranged in various ways depending on how you position the two rectangles, and do play around with the spaces in between to make more room for books and other special things. The medium shelf has the optional color backboards, and, if you want, you can also spring for green or yellow clips.

Verge Desk

At first glance, this desk reminded me of the Stash Desk by Blu Dot, but after taking a second look, it’s really not a fair comparison due to the dimensions. Sure, the Stash desk is a winner for its price and simplicity, but this desk is super sleek and has an additional 20″ in length for desktop space. Just take a look at it in another color and you’ll understand the price tag.

Blow Wall Shelf

Inspired by pieces of paper being scattered by the wind, these shelves are made by bending thin A4 sized steel plates into curves and angles. Each shelf can be hung up or down, and with 5 different types to choose from, you can create your own variation on the movement. By Tokyo based design studio YOY.

Edge Stackable Chair

One glance at all the surface planes on this aluminum chair and it’s easy to see how it was inspired by the art of origami. Sure, it doesn’t fold (like some other aluminum chairs) but considering the nice profile we’ll settle for the stackable option. Each chair takes around eight hours to manufacture- that helps explain the price tag- and can be used indoors or out. An optional seat pad is also available.

Paperback Wall Shelf

Now, this is the way to show off your collection of books. Each of your precious volumes is displayed on its own horizontal shelf, allowing for an impressive array that becomes the focus of a room. 13 shelves may be arranged however you wish, and the unit requires only four screws to mount to the wall, though do make sure you fasten them securely to studs, otherwise you’ll have an unhappy mess of shelving and books on the floor.

There’s also three larger shelves that have protruding tabs that will be the perfect home for larger objects or tomes. If you have the money to spend, several of these side by side or one above the other would look fantastic filling a whole wall.

Fusillo Shelf

Don’t go thinking this is a static shelf- it’s made of modules that rotate around a central axis so that it can change according to your needs. Each module has a sharp curve at its inner end, so that when it’s flipped up/down, it acts as hook, and the top of the module could serve as a bookend, as shown in the photos below. One in a smaller entryway would work wonders, or combine several in a longer hallway for more storage. Cyclists: take note of the bicycle storage option (for low seats/handlebars).

RAD Tables, Benches, Stools

I still have a deep affection for the Howard Stool, and surprise, surprise, it blinded me to the other perforated steel tables and benches that RAD has to offer. Coffee tables, benches, entry tables, smaller stools and side tables- they have a pretty good array of sizes to suit your needs. A few versions are shown below, and keep in mind there are several different colors to choose from.

Loll’s 4 slat Adirondack Chair

If you’re shopping for outdoor furniture, you might want to consider Loll’s version of the classic Adirondack chair. Made out of 100% recycled plastic (376 reclaimed milk jugs, fyi), it’ll stand up to the weather just fine with no maintenance. And don’t go thinking it’ll blow away when a gust of wind comes along, as it weighs more than 50 lbs. It should also be noted that if you ever tire of it (not that you would), it’s fully recyclable as well.
