At the risk of sounding like a pretentious wino, when you travel with wine, you want it to make sure it arrives unharmed. And when that wine is, say, a little expensive (why else would you travel with it) you’d do well to invest $4 in making sure it’s protected. This durable vinyl WineSkin has a double closure and an interior bubble pack that acts as an insulating shock absorber. It’s meant for one-time use (thumbs down), but it is recyclable (thumbs up), so you can hopefully shed any residual guilt from your conspicuous consumption.

24h Tuokio Tableware

If you would like a more established tableware set (i.e. nicer than what you bought at IKEA), you could do a whole lot worse than this set from Heikki Orvola. If you’re a complete dinnerware-obsessed nutcase*, you might recognize the 24h series, which Orvola designed for his own use. While perhaps the collection didn’t necessarily need improvement, Finnish designer duo Helorinne & Kallio added a little pep and pizazz (for lack of a better term) with the blue brushstroke pattern.

Loll Fire Ring

Now that it’s most certainly autumn, it’s time to think about ways to still enjoy your outside space despite the chill in the air. This fire ring will hopefully facilitate many s’mores and stories, and as it’s made from 3/16 thick steel with a solid raised internal floor to contain the ashes, it’ll do the job of keeping your fire right where you want it. The recycled poly top keeps out the elements while also doubling as an off duty cocktail table. Evolution Erasers

Regardless of your thoughts on our original ancestors, this eraser does a clever job of making an ordinary desk eraser into a small sculpture. Modern Homo sapiens is at one end, and a monkey on the other; it can be sliced into segments to show the different stages or even used as an ink stamp, if you wish. Or, just use as usual and slowly watch as one end gets worn down into the other.

Dustbin by Brendan Ravenhill

Brendan Ravenhill has incorporated a dustpan into the lid of a trashcan, making most trashcan manufacturers look like idiots for not thinking of the idea before. The steel can and lid is powder coated for durability and the included beech wood brush attaches to the side of the bin with embedded rare earth magnets. It’s not often that one can express admiration over a waste container, but in this case, it’s entirely appropriate. Well done, Mr. Ravenhill, well done.

Les Squelettes Tea Towel

Non-creepy skeletons cover this tea towel from Bon Matin. More educational in nature than Halloween-themed, you’ll have to have a go at guessing them all, and if you come up short, there’s a cutline at the bottom. There’s also a Les Squelettes print with the same imagery (yet in fluorescent green and magenta for a 3D effect) for $39.

Tetu Cast Iron Tape Dispenser

At times it might seem as if there’s a slight disposition on this site to feature the more expensive items available in the marketplace, however, know that this tape dispenser by Makoto Koizumi is one of today’s picks primarily for its design and weight. Cast iron would ensure a one handed operation (one can assume) and the design is naturally minimal. Also, if you’re interested, Makoto Koizumi also designed a simple cast iron Tetu door stopper and paper weight that has the form of a rounded stone (see below).

Scholten & Baijings’ Comforter Cover and Pillow Cases

Hello, hello. Does this mean we don’t have to settle for boring bedding? Yes, if you don’t mind the $228 price tag, which actually isn’t too bad considering what quality bedding cost nowadays. You might recognize Scholten & Baijings’ color and pattern work from their delightful tea towels, blankets and pillows, but now they’ve branched out into the bedding arena, thank goodness, with what I can only call an excellent shot at success.
