Parasol Shadylace by Chris Kabel

How quickly time flies. I posted this back in 2007, and, as is usually the case, the price has changed since then. While the Shadylace certainly isn’t new to the scene, I still think it’s a lovely choice for an outdoor umbrella. Light filters through the waterproof leaf motif, making you feel as though you’re sitting underneath a tree. Such a great alternative to all those semi-boring umbrellas out there.

Available in white or green.
Wood, steel, polyester (PE).

Top Four Light from Luxit

This little Lego-ish light features four LEDs that “achieve top performance”, but what I like most is that the head flips back and forth to provide either localized bedside lighting or an overall accent light.

Available in several vibrant colors.

Click ‘N Cook Spatula System

Hmm, take a look at these kitchen utensils. You’re seeing a modular spatula system sourced from Quirky, which features several attachments that snap into a universal handle and are released by clicking the button. Not being all that adept in the kitchen, I’m not sure of the pros and cons, but it does appear to be a good idea.

Included in the set: storage block, ergonomic handle, and five detachable spatula heads.

Cork Peg (set of 2)

While I find these cork pegs to be a tiny bit expensive to cover a whole wall with, you might be burning $50 bills for the fun of it, so here you are. They’re actually a pretty good size, which is nice, and each peg comes with a magnetic mounting system. The total weight bearing capacity is 2.65 lbs when something is hung from the end and 4.85 lbs when something is hung from the middle. See the ‘how to use’ slideshow for the magnetic magic. Could be worth saving up for…

Knoppig Planter

I’m loving the new planters from Ikea with the tiny price tag.

Glazed; makes the plant pot waterproof.
Note: It looks like you might have to make a trip to the store to purchase.

Stack Magainze Rack

It should be mentioned that this magazine rack by Robert Bronwasser could easily double as a wine rack, and can be used horizontally or vertically. Or, if you so choose, stack of a few together to make a larger storage spot.

Made of EPP (Expanded polypropylene, an engineered plastic foam material).

15.5″ W, 11.4″ D, 15.5″ H

Also available from FLINDERS for €73,59.

Tua Table Lamp

I have to say, I’m really liking this lamp. It helps that Marco Zito, the designer, explains his thinking behind the design (see below), and thereby performs an excellent sales pitch. Simple and elegant, it’s surprising that the price point can be found as low as $211, though most retailers have it around the $300 mark.

Bow Bin

Plastic bins are rarely something to be admired, but in the case of this collection, added wickerwork makes for an altogether different breed of basket. Produced by the indigenous Aeta people of the Philippines (via fair trade NGO Preda) and designed by Cordula Kehrer, each bin is made from sustainably harvested rattan and reclaimed bins.

Saatchi Online

A little art on a friday never hurt anyone, right? I ran across Saatchi Online the other day, and found there to be quite an array of interesting art starting around the $60 mark and going up into the thousands for originals. So, whether you’ve a few bucks to spend or lots and lots to invest, you might find something that suits your fancy. A few of my favorites are below.

VIPP Dishwashing Set

Dishwashing is one of those chores few to look forward to doing. However,
it could be just a tad bit more enjoyable for the rest of us with this set by VIPP. Rubber moulded steel protects your more fragile dishes and the brush has an easily exchangeable head. A handy bracket is included to hide everything away inside a cabinet door (though I suppose you could put it on view if you wanted).

Alarm Dock

At first glance, this looks like an old faux wood grain alarm clock, but look a little closer and you’ll see an iPhone. Since almost everyone uses their cell phones as alarm clocks nowadays, Jonas Damon made this dock to allow for an iPhone to appear as the display, which means a more substantial form on your bedside table. Phone, of course, is not included.

Silhouette Platter and Plates

We’ve featured Christopher Jagmin’s Even and Odd Dinner Plates, but these silhouette pieces are worth a look as well. The platter would look just at home on a wall as on your table, and the small plates would be a nice size for salads or sandwiches.

Wood Glass Canisters

Storage containers are probably one of the lesser exciting things to shop for, especially when you consider all the other accessories and gadgets it takes to make a house a home. These containers would fit well within the kitchen, office or bathroom, corralling all manner of small things in a tidy silhouette of wood and glass. An optional rubber lip can be slipped on to create airtight storage.

Small ($20) or Large ($23).

Lloop Basic

Usually cords are unappealing and annoying necessities, but in the case of the Lloop Basic by
Vij5, the cord is a functional decoration. Two wooden pieces allow you to extend or shorten loops of the electrical cable to get the height (and look) you want.

Aluminium lampshade, two wooden pieces, transparent plastic pull relief and 6 meters of textile electricity cable

City Boy Picnic Grill

Talk about a truly portable little grill, this one designed by Klaus Aalto measures 7.1″ x 7.1″ with a height 8.7″. I don’t know about you, but that might just be the smallest (decent) grill I’ve ever seen. If you’re planning on lots of picnicking in the park this summer, it might be worth the money.

Size: 7.1″ x 7.1″, height 8.7″
