Site Remodel

Purchase information: add/see comments.
So, we're planning a remodel and we want to hear your comments on what you'd like to see happen. There's all sorts of ways we could grow, and really, it's kind of up to all of you, so please think big and tell us what you want. We'll do our best to make it happen.

Some questions:
1) Do you want comments enabled on all posts?
2) Would you like to have an option of registering and saving your favorites?
3) Do you want an easier way to submit links and products?
4) More information on sales and specials from retailers? Giveaways?
5) Do you want us to reinstate the newsletter (that we had oh-so-long ago) on a monthly or bi-monthly basis?
6) Are there other design topics you'd like to see covered, such as design materials or home tours?

We've enabled comments so that it can be more of a discussion, so please let us know what you think.

I love the idea of registering and being able to save favourites. I've often sifted through a few dozen pages looking for something I wanted to revisit and didn't save the link.

More info on retailer's sales would be interesting, but it isn't necessarily what I come here for. Perhaps others (especially those in the US who these retailers generally target) feel differently.

Yes to all, maybe a digg like voting for each post so you can vote on stuff you like.

I love the idea of being able to register and save "favorites".

I like your suggestion to save my favorites. Right now I just keep them selected in Bloglines.
Don't change too much. I like the simplicity of your posts. We can go someplace else for home tours. Do something unique.

- A directory of Manufacturers would be useful. It would be nice to have the directory divided according to pricing (modest/intermediate/prestige). People can always find items they like, but sometimes those items are out of one's price range. A pricing category helps one eliminate options that are not viable for them.

I think comments on posts would be a wonderful addition. I also think adding a Web category would be nice. There are lots of fantastic web designs out there that your readers might enjoy knowing about.

BLTD is pretty close to perfect already, any useful additions might include more user participation. Comments or addition of some suggested links would be great, that way can suggest or exchange similar designs or deals. Second to the notion of tiering the pricing so its similar to "getting this look for less." Otherwise great job, love the selection simple design and usefulness even through the newsreader.

First of all, this is probably the only website I visit everyday (beside yahoo to check my mail). This is an incredible resource.

Being able to save favorites would be a great feature.

Also, some sort of social networking component would be great where site users can interact with one another to share info, find out about local happenings relevant to design, and trade/buy/sell furniture and services among themselves.

Would love for this site to host an Ebay style auction exclusively focused on the kind of merchandise typically found on this site.

Keep up the good work.

My one request is that you include the item price and purchase link in the body of each entry in the RSS feed. Currently, at least in Google Reader, I can't see item prices.

Thanks to everybody for taking the time to comment- it's really helpful to hear what you think.

All of these are great suggestions, and we're definitely going to consider each one carefully. I think we'll definitely enable comments on all posts, we just need to tweak a couple of things to make it fit into the site more.

Price tiering is definitely something we can do... it'll take us a while to go through all of the posts, but I can see how that would really help narrow down the search. So, yes, good idea there.

Lots of ideas and lots to think about, but, again, really good to hear what you all think. -katie

I thoroughly enjoy this site, but do not want to see major changes. I like the idea of registering and saving favorites, though I would still like to be able to leave comments without having to register/login.

Comments are always a great addition.

In general I like all of the ideas, except for the idea of expanding the topics. I like the simplicity of the current site. I love coming to see cool products, I don't want to have to sift through what somebody found on craigslist, or look at pictures of a 400 sq foot apartment. There are other sites for that type of stuff. I

Keep up the fantastic work!

Also, I think it would be cool to have a Top 10 of sorts. This could tie in with the voting thing a previous commenter mentioned. It would be kind of neat to track what the Top 10 products on BLTD were.

I'm a huge fan of the site - check it everyday. Would also love the ability to save favorites. Would love to be able to see more on a page at a time (e.g. thumbnails of content and could dig deeper on certain items, rather than page through).
I'd also love a forum to submit/browse photos of design work done by readers; a source for sharing creative ideas and finding inspiration. I love to see how some people use some of the items posted on the site - might be fun to even have these connected with the specific product blog entries?

I love the site how it is, simple, clean, magazine like. Please don't start doing give-aways! They're ruining many of my favorite sites and are so pandering. It also chip away at the integrity of the other posts since you start to wonder what has been paid for with money or freebies. I seriously love the site as is though, it's an amazing resource.

Jason said:

I love this site. And like many of these people I check in every day and have spec'd several products for our projects. I absolutely love the idea of being able to save favorite items so that you can find them again quickly.

I'm not so keen on comments only because they always tend to get in the way or muddy up the page. I love the simplicity of how the page is set up, and would hate it if that was lost.

I'm also not all that keen on expanding the scope of the content, because, like others have said, there are other places that I go to get my fix for those other things. I like this because it's more of a "curated show" - I know that everything's going to be good.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

The layout and functionality of your site is better than most anything else out there. Keep up the good work !

Madeline said:

Do you want comments enabled on all posts?

No thank you. I don't particularly care what other people have to say about the items; the Post-ers give a good enough opinion of them. If you must, perhaps a discrete, separate link to see comments in a new window

Would you like to have an option of registering and saving your favorites?

Yes, brilliant idea-

Do you want us to reinstate the newsletter (that we had oh-so-long ago) on a monthly or bi-monthly basis?

I think this is a good idea, but what would be in it? As a daily blog, what more could you put in a newsletter....would it just be summations of the site monthly?

Are there other design topics you'd like to see covered, such as design materials or home tours?
I would suggest further exploration of some of the design shows that bltd attends--Perhaps incorporation of video and interviews with the designers (going beyond just spotlighting the design object.)
Also, maybe special segments on design-based exhibitions.

Lastly, the REMODEL, READ, and TRAVEL sections are developing very nicely, but I still only check the main page daily. The other three I check periodically. I believe that theses sections need more attention. Maybe excerpts can be attached to the books in the READ section.
Keep up the amazing work! I've been a daily fan of the website for around two years, and I am very happy to see your successes!

I just thought of one more thing. From the posts above it seems that there is a want of networking and viewer interaction. Rather than retooling the site to have this network/interaction, I think it would be better to take advantage of the existing framework of online networking sites: i.e., Facebook. If bltd developed a facebook application (perhaps one new post would come up everyday on your profile page) not only would it provide for this networking that these loyal readers seem to want, but it exposes this site to the friends and extended networks of your die-hards..... In this way bltd can increase viewership to people beyond the design field, truly educating on Better Living Through Design.
(and I'm sure advertisers won't mind an increased, more diverse demographic of readers)

Put the link to the product and the price in the RSS feed!

I think it would be great to categorize pages by dates. Say, at a week at a time. So if I forgot to save something to my favorites, then if I remember it was two weeks ago, I can look up that date.

Btld is a breath of fresh air; i enjoy the ideas you show us that I might never see. It is so clean kitch-free. Thank you!
I will admit I like to see the price and know if it available. If it's not available then I won't get my hopes up, so I can forget about it. I have from time to time written you asking how I can find a site for one of your finds that is not in Japanese(a black coat rack for example), feeling frustrated by not being able to read about it(my japanese is not so good).

I think, if anything I would like your comments.

1- i dont believe comments might be of vital use in this kind of blog. not much to discuss. it's not like there are political debates here.
2- yeah, registering and saving favourites might prove quite useful, at least for me. making a kind of a gift list is fun and mnemonic.
3- readers can submit links?!?! wow! how nice. that is great.
4- i see a technical list, on were to put the author and manufacturer, of the upmost importance. sometimes i see myself wandering the web searching the designer of something posted here.
5- no need for me, thanks. i hate newsletters.
6- design materials is FY topic. that would be rockin awsome. i also think that architecture designs and interiors should also be covered. just to context the world of interior design where we currently live in. sometimes we just see blocks and blocks of design and no space. interiors would be a nice covering.

I think BLTD is already wonderful. To upgrade, User comments on all post and a personal and public favorite section would be great.

Also, maybe a VBulletin forum, I think they are great to enforce the users participation. I could have a link 'Start a new thread about...' or 'Discuss about ...' Below each post.
